Text messaging might just be the way to stay in touch with friends and relatives in far off lands. And while U.S. carriers have lagged behind Europe and Asia in SMS services that could be changing. Telecommunications Industry News is reporting that AT&T has announced America’s first widely available international text messaging plan. For as little as 10 cents a message users will be able to send SMS messages to other mobile phone users overseas. AT&T mobile phone subscribers can pay $9.99 a month to send up to 100 international messages to more than 140 countries around the world.

What the heck? How is this news? I’ve been sending SMS messages to friends in foreign countries for over a year (on Cingular). 10c a message as well…
