Remember the early days of pop-up ads on the Internet. They were interesting at first, and then become downright annoying about… oh, five seconds later. Well, get ready for round two. Pop-up ads are headed to a third screen near you. Some startups are already on starting to push technology that will deliver pop-ups to mobile phones.
Worse the ads won’t necessarily pop when using a browser, but rather can pop-up when the phone’s screen is idle! Some of the companies behind these ads suggest they’ll work on ads that users won’t find annoying. But let me ask this question: When was the last time you didn’t find a pop-up ad annoying?

I believe the idea of mobile banners isn’t very revolutionary. Unless users (especially young users) are actually looking for something the ad is related to, the ad will affect the recipient negatively.
Nevertheless, if they do find a good way of getting the ads to the right person, it will be useful. I’m excited to see if mobile providers allow price cuts on their plans as response ;)
I seriously doubt you’ll see plan prices drop because a lot of the ad revenue doesn’t go to the carrier. Plus, the fees the collect from plans are much more than what they could get from ads. For now anyway.
I agree that mobile ads won’t make phone plans cheaper. Pop-up ads on the Internet didn’t lower most users ISP bills.
