pa.gd (Paged Mobile) shortens Web for Mobile

pagedmobile.jpgWhen recently asked, “have you ever tired to enter a long Web address without using a standard QWERTY keyboard” I was reminded of my visit this summer to the City of Light. Paris is many things, but a high-tech metropolis it is not. The cybercafés were crowded and very few had “western” QWERTY keyboards. So I was reduced to trying to use my Blackberry and international mobile phone to check e-mail, and more importantly check the status of my eBay auctions! Well, my holiday to Europe was almost ruined when I lost one of the auctions because I couldn’t easily check my e-mail. Logging into eBay’s short Web site URL was easy enough, but other sites are a pain to type on mobile devices.

So over here at MobileCrunch we were was pleased to hear about Paged Mobile, or pa.gd as the company is also calling itself. Basically pa.gd is providing a solution to create shorter Web addresses, which are essentially similar to nicknames for Web sties. This service provides a short way to enter thousands of Web addresses much like online shortcuts. More than 11,000 sites to date are available and this works with YubNub commands. The site is currently in beta, so it will be one to watch and see how this evolves.

While it could mean further degradation of the English language, and reduce the common lexicon to more anagrams, anything that makes mobile Web surfer is worth it!

  • “The cybercafés were crowded and very few had “western” QWERTY keyboards”

Complaining that French cafes use French keyboards isn’t entirely fair… what other keyboard should they use? A US keyboard without any accents, yet alone their currency?

  • Did you try to use one of the eBay wireless alert services? Not sure they work in Europe or not but in any case our own solution which allows listing on eBay from a cellphone will work with non QWERTY as well as we rely on ‘templates’ created on the PC and downloaded to the mobile, so you just have to add a title and some descriptive stuff with the fancy html already there, but yes I do realize listing an item for sale on eBay is expected to take a little longer than checking on an auction

  • You make it more complicated in an effort to make it less complicated which is not making it less complicated at all. Get it?

  • I don’t agree with you completely if you refer to Paged mobile service.

Hopefully you considered that Paged mobile is especially for mobile phones.

Suppose we have a mobile phone with a dial pad and Opera mini browser installed and already started. For example, we want to enter techcrunch.com.
Using the dial pad by the SMS-like way, you need 31 (!) keypresses to enter techcrunch.com. Moreover if you have no luck, you mistype approximately 2 or 3 letters during the 31 keypresses (mistyping means a wrong letter, delete it, and choose the right letter again – additional possible keypresses). Paged mobile service has a shortcut tech for techcrunch.com and tech needs only 8 keypresses (!) to type (with fewer possible input error). And if you recall the Paged mobile service before from the bookmarks that means a few additional keystrokes and time in general. I don’t think that this procedure can be easily described as “which is not making it less complicated at all”, at least for me I would conclude the same if there are similar amount of keypresses necessary than entering the original web address, but using the shortcut system should be much shorter in general.

Finally, I don’t say that Paged mobile service is perfect, I hope that I can find a way to make it more usable.
