Shots of the HTC Dream G1 handset in the wild
by Greg Kumparak on September 19, 2008

With the big announcement just days away, it’s no surprise that some folks out there might be totin’ the Android-powered HTC Dream (G1) around. Between all of the Google developers, HTC product engineers, and T-Mobile employees involved, in-the-wild shots were bound to get out sooner or later.

And now they have, on the blog of Mark “Rizzn” Hopkins. Rizzn got the shots through a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-spy, and passed’em on for the world to see. While there isn’t all that much new to see from these shots, it sure is nice to see it out and about - and more importantly, that it doesn’t seem all that tough to type around that eyesore on the end.

I just got an E71 but I’m wondering if I should have held out for Android…

I’m really interested to see this thing in person, beyond the obvious reason of seeing Android running, in the photos the bottom of the phone always looks just thrown on, like there’s an iTrip attached to it.

Riles I agree. Seems ill-thought-out to create a touch screen and then have “the stubb.” The pop-out-keyboard is necessary and should be good. The difficulty in typing on the touchscreen keyboard on the iphone has kept me from buying one for two generations now, despite numerous flirtations. I think I am going to get the Dream, despite The Stub, the main attraction being the expandability of the open-source software.

It is a geek’s wet dream. Hopefully HTC release the Touch Diamond with Android later down the road.

I don’t like the aesthetic on this particular phone at all…seems clunky. I can’t wait to see Androids toys either

I’m so glad that T-Mobile is the network partner for this. I skipped the iPhone because it’s partnered with AT&T, a network I’ve been on before and left with great disappointment. The phone looks flimsy and breakable.

What a perfect upgrade for my T-Mobile Wing … Windows Mobile, seeya, it’s been real.
