Facebook for iPhone clicks over to version 2.0
by Greg Kumparak on September 29, 2008

After Facebook rolled out v1.1 of their iPhone application, they promised that a bigger, badder v2.0 was in the works for September. They cut it pretty close, but they’ve kept their word. Just a few hours ago, the second major release of the Facebook application hit the App Store, bearing a whole new user interface and a slew of fresh features. With this latest release, they’ve managed to pack just about everything Facebook has to offer into a neat and native mobile interface.

While previous releases of the Facebook application supported the News Feed feature, only mobile photo uploads and status updates were displayed. In version 2.0, the News Feed has been completely overhauled to match item-for-item with that of the site itself, throwing news posts, relationship and interest updates, and all photo uploads into the mix. Furthermore, users are now able to comment on any given bit of news, or limit the feed to only the categories they wish to peruse.

Notably limited in the original release, much of the photo-oriented functionality of the site has made the jump over. Where as previous versions were confined to the most basic of upload options, v2 supports captioning, tagging, and the posting of photos to the Walls of your cohorts.

Moreover, digging through for that specific person or top secret love letter has been made far less taxing, thanks to the addition of people and inbox searching. Once you’ve found the person you’re looking for, you’re now (finally!) able to send them a friend request. Last to be mentioned but perhaps the most important for some, the application has been polished up on the stability and efficiency fronts, which they claim will be especially obvious if you run with a massive e-crew.

Even as a fairly regular user of the initial release, I’ve yet to find anything to complain about in this newest one. The interface is clean and buttery, and all of the functionality I’d found myself trekking over to the nearest standard browser for has made its way in. It doesn’t have support for Facebook apps, which I view as a good thing; even be it that the number of existing limitations that would prevent or dampen that could be circumvented, a significant portion of applications would be little but annoyances when on the go.

Coming in at the always welcome price of free, Facebook v2 is more than worth the few seconds required to upgrade. Grab it over here. [iTunes Link] (Note: According to comments, Facebook might be having a rough time handling the onslaught of iPhone users, preventing some folks from logging in. If you can’t live without Facebook at your side, you may be better off waiting a day or two to upgrade.)

How can MySpace compete with Facebook’s consistent improvements in usability without a complete design overhaul?

have you used the Myspace iPhone app? it’s actually pretty nice. there wasn’t much between it and the old facebook app.

the site itself is still crapballs, though.

MySpace is the eternal sucker among social networks! Extremely hard to navigate and every page is loaded with loads of pig shit!
I prefer orkut or facebook for that matter!

Cool bonus feature: Shake your iPhone to refresh the News Feed.

Doesn’t seem to work for me- I can’t log in.

I’ve spotted a few twitterers saying something similar. To fall back on the old IT support go-tos, did you try removing the app and reinstalling it, or a quick reset? I’ve had at least two iPhone apps that refused to work at all until I’d killed the handset for a second.

I had to do this earlier to get an app we reviewed to work. Always just reset the phone and see if that works first. Almost always has worked for me.

Neither can I. Must be swamped by the UK mob!

I mean, I can’t log in either. Restarting the phone doesn’t seem to help much. Looks like the password is accepted but says “Unable to connect to Facebook. Please try again later.”

Yikes. Thanks for the heads up.

Happened to both my wife and I this morning. I deleted the app on both phones, and then synced the phones again. We were then able to log in just fine. The new app is great.

I have language issues in Belgium. French and English are used together…

no problems here. upgraded and logged in.

Looks great. About to install it now.

Cant believe nobody else caught that in the blogosphere

This app is SLICK! Developers have a LOT to learn from the Facebook app…I just have one question…how the heck are they going to make money from Facebook if they continue to improve the app so much that users have no reason to use the computer version…

They can now start using location based advertising. Maybe people will actually click those, unlike the adds currently on facebook.

That’s a great point. These apps keep getting to be so easy to use and are the perfect interface for social networking, with the camera and all. Need to add video capabilities and we’re set.

Is the accept friend request feature working for anyone? The app seems to forget my confirmation when it is restarted. Odd.

And yet another sweet iPhone app I can’t use. I’m really investing a lot of hope in the most likely bs rumor of a VZW iPhone next year.

Very nice app. It seems my usage of Facebook increases tenfold with every version or so.

Next up a decent buddy location feature?

I guess its better than the wap site! :)

Nice, looks like a good upgrade. I’ll have to download that this evening! I didn’t mind the previous version, but it looks like a few of the improvements will make it operate much smoother. In agreement with a few posts above, Myspace needs to catch up now…

I didn’t like the new facebook website look. The facebook badge is a tease, to see the status people still need to login to facebook.

Nice….Ning’s new iPhone interface is a web app, and having the two side-by-side makes it easier to demonstrate a native app’s advantages.

As in, FB’s iPhone app is quite nice & IMO shines over Ning’s. :)
