When the economy takes a hit, so do cell phone sales. Last quarter, mobile phone sales in the U.S. dropped 15 percent to 32 million units, according to market research firm NPD Group. But in hard times, the strongest brands also take share. And that is exactly what Apple did.
The 6.9 million iPhones it sold last quarter catapulted the $200 device into the top spot among all cell phones, even beating out the much cheaper and still-popular Motorola Razr. (Yes, they still sell that thing. They just don’t make any money off of it.)
Here are the top five phones sold last quarter, according to the NPD Group:
1. Apple iPhone 3G
2. Motorola RAZR V3 (all models)
3. RIM Blackberry Curve (all models)
4. LG Rumor
5. LG enV2
Note that the BlackBerry Curve is No.3. Who says expensive smart phones are only for geeks? Everybody is getting one.

What should we expect from the third iPhone?

Apple is ranked #5 in total sales for the complete fiscal year. The data you all see here is based on Q3 2008. I am pretty sure iPhone will start to slip towards the beginning of next year. But what can be interesting to see is the people are ready to spend big bucks (the monthly fees you have to pay to AT&T) for a good device. This should be one more lesson for Microsoft or maybe even RIM.

Great news, everyone should now agree iPhone is a revolution. Only hardware being touchscreen, production cost of iphone and its clones are bound to fall drastically over time. Let come the Storm.
Handheld being solved with this, Steve Jobs now should look into living room screen, integrating tv, video and music player – all it takes is a good software..
I wonder what impact the new Blackberry is going to have on apple…
Who cares?
The Blackberry seems to be the poor mans iPhone, but the RAZR? Must be because it’s offered free with new plans on almost every network.
I think thats exactly it, thats why I had one for the better part of two years (before grabbing a iPhone).
What I’m surprised about is the how the iPhone is in the number one spot despite being tied down to only one network. One would think that RIM phones would take the lead simply because they are more available on more networks.
How about the compact size and a battery that lasts longer than 1 day?
Not to mention the number of apps is growing by the dozens every day! You can get alerts for new iPhone apps at Gotapps.com:

latest rumors are that the iphone team is redesigning the keyboard to look like the bb storm. Once that happens more biz users will make the switch.
it doesn’t matter what apps you have, if you can’t type a message.
I like Iphone but i only have ipod touch now. Anyway, i like it !
It is amazing how Apple keeps reinventing itself.
The IPod and now the IPhone probably helped saved the company.
It will be intriguing to see if those two gadgets can help them avoid the worst in this recession.
Imagine if they had not innovated
I love the Steve Jobs-innovation humor.
Still a proud Nokia n82 owner though.
If IPhone 3.0 prints money, I’m buying one.
Did anyone else see the new sprint commercial where that dan hesse guy mocks steve jobs lines…”wouldn’t it be great”…”pretty cool, huh”…and i remember hearing at least one other.
that guy seems like quite the sore loser right now. lol. instinct. hehe. to think that i was considering that at one point. phew. what would i do w/o my iphone!!!
Completely agree. Those sprint ads would be cutting edge if this were 2002…and $99, is that even a good deal? My iPhone plan (1st gen) is $59.99 a month. He must be speaking to his new target P87+ who are clueless.
Does that $59.99/month cover unlimited voice calls, data, messaging, GPS navigation, and TV? I doubt it. The newer iPhone’s messaging rate also went up significantly.
It’s just interesting that Sprint is finally doing something to market their data network…it’s typically been faster and cheaper than most of their competitors, but they don’t do much to advertise it.
Now you will witness the full power of the Death Star, I mean iPhone!
I was pretty surprised to see that the iPhone finally took over the RAZR in sales. Then again, I’ve had multiple razr’s and never plan on getting one ever again, so there you go I guess.
Zendoo.com has Apple iPhone 1st gen and Apple iPhone 3g for sale used at pretty good discounts!
Erick, why is Motorola making no money from the RAZR sales?
“They just don’t make any money off of it.”
Use “off” or “from”. “off of” is not correct English.
WOW! Im surprised! Heh!

everyone that wants the blackberry, who aren’t geeks, are stupid dumbasses in california highschool, that can cum out of enjoyment from the usage of myspace and facebook! focking mainstreamers and their rap music! I bet their head can explode before 5 seconds of knowing that ther is a way you can play old school game on your computer for free(nes, snes, n64, psx… emulators). Us nerds are better than them.
Bravo. The iPhone outselling a 2005 phone. The only thing this news tells me is that the US mobile phone market is pathetic.

I think the Sprint Instinct will increase in sales as well. It seems like a very well made and well designed product.
US sales huh.. Grats, meanwhile Nokia still sells more phones worldwide in a single week than Apple has sold iPhones since its introduction.
too bad their computers and their os completely blow. agreed, good thing they have the iPhone to save them. i’m off to go see a “genius” about getting my mac fixed again. Though i still think different.
mmm…another stick-to-pc kind of guy…OS completely blow..oh, you were talking about Vista? …excuse me..Windows 7?…whatever
What is interesting is the impact that it will have on the behavior of Verizon execs. Apple originally went to them and wanted full control of the phone, but Verizon likes to monetize their customers as well as possible by removing such things as Obex push from their phones so people cannot send ringtones, wallpapers, etc., from phone to phone. Moreover, Verizon also likes to put their on-deck offers and applications onto their phones.
This is a great lesson to Verizon in humility; their way of thinking in this case was clearly outdated and no matter how much hype they attempt to create with such subpar products as the Voyager, Dare, etc, they just can’t kill the iPhone.
i’m wondering why does n82 not have audio themes? even 5700 has audio themes. why does N82 not have message reader when n81 has got it? and can anybody confirm if n95 8gb has menu transition on v31? if it has, then why does n82 doesn’t have? that’s unfair.even if n82 wouldn’t have all the fp2 suite, just that menu transition should be included on n82’s next firmware, if ever there will be a next firmware for n82 after v31. the n85 really has a very beautiful user interface.i mean it’s the most complete among all released s60 phones. pls answer me if n95 8gb v31 has got menu transitions. thanx in advance.
