The calendar now reads November 21st and, just as expected, iPhone firmware 2.2 has been released to the masses. Seeing as a pretty good number of developers have had their hands on test versions of 2.2 for sometime now, and as NDAs generally turn to pudding after a few hundred people are in on the secret, we’ve had a pretty good idea of what this release would bring to the table for a while.
For the sake of those who may have missed a day or two, though, we’ll recap: Safari’s address bar/search has been tweaked a bit, apps now request a rating upon deletion, over-the-air podcast downloads (which, oddly, works over 3G, though podcasts downloaded over radio can’t be over a certain size, determined by the carrier), various video and audio quality tweaks, and assorted bug fixes throughout. Oh, and Google Maps has been upgraded to include Street View and directions for public transit and walking – if you have an iPhone rather than an iPod Touch, that is.
According to early reports, 2.2 for the iPod Touch brings everything but the Google Maps upgrade. No one’s quite sure why Touch users are missing out; perhaps Apple came to the conclusion that they would have legally had to charge for the upgrade, as they did when they added the Mail/Maps/Stocks/Notes/Weather applications? Seems a bit absurd, seeing as this is simply an upgrade – but we’ll wait until some sort of official reason before passing judgement.
[Thanks David!]

Going to get the long and painful update done tomorrow… Only 4 iPhones to do — yikes! ;)
I hope that this means that Safari won’t crash all the time anymore. I couldn’t care less about the other new features, but it would be nice if I could browse for more than 5 minutes without a crash that loses all of my open “tabs”.
I found that issue to be related to having too many browser sessions open at once, I just limit myself now.
For those just reading, it is about 250MB, so it will take a little while.
From the updates, doesn’t seem like they improved MobileMe settings yet. I was looking for the ability to send emails from an alias from the iphone itself.
Great news on the Google maps for walking routes – now i wont have to take one way streets whilst navigating my way round London. Very handy.
And Emoji for us in Japan, that will increase sales here BIG time.
I hope that soon will be available jailbreak :)
Nothing of interest here for me unfortunaetly
As for Safari crashing I dont seem to have an issue with this on 2.1 Street view is only useful for those walking the streets inthe States. I feel alot of iPhone users are going to yawn like me at this one and are a bit disapointed that there wasnt somethings added we all have actually wanted for along time
I would call it 2.1.5 not 2.2
I just want better 3G reception for the UK. The iPhone does pretty much everything I want (except for letting apps run in the background) except provide a decent phone!
The update crashed my iPhone. I had to recover it, and it is now restoring. I hope all my contacts and text messages will not be lost….
Yep, I just downloaded the 2.2 update for my iPod Touch.
I’m not fussed about jailbreaking it either,
I haven’t found it to be much of an interest to me,
according to me, as long as it can do what I want it to do and also do what Apple promises it to be able to do, I’m happy.
However, it will be exciting to hear when this new firmware is jailbroken.
I’m far too attached to my jailbreak apps to install this yet.
Why no copy and paste? Why no folder admin for pictures? Why no search in emails? Come on Apple. Guess they love keeping their fans aching with anticipation for the next firmware upgrade. I hope the “misc. bug fixes” will be robust at least.
a simple free app for hotmail would be nice ,i,m sure its not to difficult!!!
I’m personally excited from the video podcast download, lets see if it works well.
So I just checked the video podcast download and its amazing, easy to browse and download at least with wifi.
oh no, the iphone software updater on a windows 95 machine – thats odd
This is completely unfair.
I’ve been eagerly awaiting the new map features (Street, Walking Directions) only to find that iPod Touch users don’t get these.
What is the reason for this!?
I got an Ipod Touch because it used the same interface as the iPhone, and allowed me to use the same features! I didn’t get an iPod touch so I could use HALF of the features found on the iPhone.
Everyone contact Apple:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodtouch.html
and tell them what WE think!
This isn’t acceptable!
K.A.: The iPod Touch can no have walking directions or turn-by-turn directions as it’s lacking the hardware. The iPod Touch does not have the built-in GPS that the iPhone has.
There are more differences between the iPhone and the iPod Touch than just the phone…
2.3 better have searchable email. I agree that I don’t care at all about street view. That’s a secondary convenience feature whereas searchable email is a primary usability item. C’mon, you’d think with how great the searching is in finder that they could get even a basic email search going. Oh, and let my inbox grow to more than 200 mails without having to download more through the interface. We’ve got 16GB of space, how about letting us set a max inbox size instead of having to futz with download more every time.
Glad this is out. Maybe now they can shift their focus to features customers are asking for, like MMS. I make the case here: http://blog.mcmanus-family.com/2008/09/the-case-for-mms-on-the-iphone.html
No good for Australia
I can’t wait for 3.0 firmware release :)
Interessante Informationen.
