i have a nokia, which has survived for over 5 years. among other uses i find it makes a good door-prop and bottle opener. my friend watched me open a bottle with my nokia. i bet him his ericsson couldn’t. he broke it trying.

From what the device testing folk told me, failure is expected – they don’t expect any screen to survive a 2 meter direct hit from a ball bearing, for example, but they might require that it makes it through a hit from a shorter distance. It’s not so much “Does it fail?” as it is “When and how does it fail?”

All these tests do represent, for the most part, the wear & tear these devices go through but I wonder what’s the threshold for failure rate before the product is deemed fit to be marketed.

Badass – I ride a motorcycle around beijing with a nokia in my pocket – walk-full speed into table corners. throw my phone across rooms at parties to people, I drop my phone, I do just about everything to it imaginable (short of inserting it into places its not meant to go). Nokias have been badasses for years – i buy two $20 nokias at a time so that when they fall in the pool or get snowboarded over, i just pop in a backup sim and Im good to go again.
