You seem to have associated Z's Villa, which's in the heart of Detroit, MI, with Chesterfield Township, MI.!

Chesterfield Twp is a part of metropolitan Detroit, but I don't believe *anybody* thinks of Chesterfield Twp as urban, in case that's a requirement for being on Urbanspoon.

Thanks for the well written interview with Ethan. I liked how you stopped and paused to talk about the numbers and what they mean. While the barrier to entry is a lot lower when it's a free app the fact is that it wouldn't have so many downloads or be selected for an Apple commercial unless it was a really good idea executed really well.

[...] MobileCrunch interviewed Urbanspoon cofounder Ethan Lowry yesterday revealing some interesting insights into the 10th most popular iPhone application. The application provides a database of restaurants covering major cities in the United States and Canada (as well London in the UK and both Sydney and Melbourne, Australia). All’s you do is enter some of the specifics into your iPhone like price range and number of people, shake your phone and it’ll find a matching restaurant in your area. These are some of the key points that really got me thinking: [...]

Great interview but the open source hating was a bit unfortunate. Maybe they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them but not building an Urbanspoon android app only invites others to eat their lunch as more android phones hit the market.

Well done to the Urbanspoon team, but when are we going to stop flapping our gums over download numbers for free apps?

It's a useless metric on so many levels. If you're selling the app then sure, download numbers translate into a usable business metric i.e. revenue. If it's a free app then it's an empty number - you can't even market to those people since you have no permission to contact them.

It's like saying "my website has been visited 100,000,000 times since it was launched!" - what does that even mean?

We need to start looking at daily active users or user engagement, not absolute downloads, to measure a free app's *real* audience. Alternatively, it would have been interesting to get some insight into how (or if) the increased number of downloads correlates to new signups on their actual website.
