RemoteDroid: use your G1 as a mouse and keyboard for your PC

RemoteDroid allows you to use the touchscreen and keyboard of your G1 as inputs for your PC. I’m trying to think of a situation in which this would be handy and not just cool, but I can’t. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s totally awesome. Actually, it could be useful for a home theater PC setup, or for making people think your computer is haunted.

You’ll need to install the “server” on your Windows machine, and then of course the app on your G1. After that you’re only limited by your imagination. And some other stuff, probably.

  • There is also one called gMote 2 that is fully functional and also acts as an in hand shortcut list for all of the major TV and media sites such as HULU, has a media control interface for VLC and is really easy to set up.

  • So here’s the situation where this application is handy and not just cool:

I have an LCD tv with an HDMI input and a laptop with an HDMI out. I often use Hulu, Sling.com, or ABC.com to watch on demand video. The problem is that, especially on ABC.com, when a commercial comes up in the middle of the program you then have to get up and walk across the room to hit “Play” again. I tried a wireless usb mouse, but it was too far. I’m sure a bluetooth mouse and keyboard would do the trick, but who wants to have that next to the bed if you don’t have to. So, I use this for everything. It works amazingly well. If I’m done watching a show and ABC I can type in Hulu.com and select what I want to watch there. All with something about the size of a normal remote that is ALWAYS with me anyway.

We have not had a traditional TV for the last 5 years, but only used a computer as source. In the beginning we used a TV tuner attached to the computer (MCE etc.) later we turned to netflix and hulu.

What surprised me was the change of habbits that was introduced after using the computer (HTPC) in stead of the TV. During the presidential debates last year, we saw them on the web, and used the web during and after to get more information. It was much more rich and interactive.

I see a HUGE need for applications like these. I tried a similar application on iPhone: intelliremote. Worked well, but there is still some work needed before they get truly useful.

There is a ton of opportunity and room for innovation in this space.

  • this would be really useful for netbook use in class
