Slacker for iPhone coming “as soon as tomorrow”

Hungry for some Slacker streaming radio on your iPhone? The BlackBerry app just became available earlier today, and it looks like they’re already prepped to go live on Apple’s finest. We ran into a Slacker rep tonight at the ShowStoppers CES event, said some magic words, and were presented with Slacker for iPhone in all of its glory – and we’ve got the screenshots to prove it.

According to the rep, the iPhone Slacker app could be on the App Store “as soon as tomorrow” – which could just as well mean months from now. As we’re now quite accustomed to hearing, the ball is essentially in Apple’s court; once they give it the greenlight, it’ll go live. It won’t feature the battery-saving song caching that the BlackBerry app has claimed as an exclusive, but it’ll have at least one feature exclusive temporarily: “Fine tuning”. Once you’ve got your streams set up, you can tell the application to adjust the stream based off of your favorites, the song’s popularity, and how recently the song was released[PSGallery=1moi7y696c]

  • $25M in VC for an iPhone app and a Blackberry app? Seriously?

    • What the hell are you talking about?
The apps are just one outreach. They also have had the webplayer running for years, released 2 portable players, and partnered with several companies with the player on sling, Sony Bravia TV’s and more.

  • Dennis Mudd is C.E.O. of Slacker…(prior of Musicmatch). Success is sure to follow.

  • Will this be Wifi only like Pandora or will it stream over 3G? I love Pandora but this looks pretty much like it and the station line up isn’t that bad.

  • You assume we all know exactly what this app does. That’s a bad assumption.

  • that’s ironic

  • “It won’t feature the battery-saving song caching that the BlackBerry app has claimed as an exclusive, but it’ll have at least one feature exclusive temporarily: “Fine tuning”.”

This is disappointing. If there is no caching on the iPhone, how is it any better than Pandora? I have an iPod Touch, and can’t get Wi-Fi all the time.

  • I hate to say it, and believe me when I say I love Pandora, but Slacker could just be the next best thing. Pandora is great, it really is, but it’s got it’s problems as any app does.

I’ve used the Slacker webplayer for a while in addition to Pandora, both web and iPhone, and sometimes I think the Slacker song catalog is bigger or maybe just the way it chooses what to play next. Pandora, I always seem to get the same songs with a new one thrown in eery now and then. Could just be me though.

Honestly though, would it be that bad to have two really awesome music apps for the iPhone.

  • It’s been released! Downloaded it 15 minutes ago. Sounds great over 3G! Thanks Slacker!
