What’s the quickest way to kill any momentum you might have built up in the past 24 hours, Palm? How about pricing the Pre at $399, as this rumor currently zipping around the Internet suggests?
A Russian, who is apparently Mr. Credible for having reported on the death of the RAZR 3, says that Palm will price the Pre at $399 when it launches on Sprint in a few months. That’s $100 $200 more than the 8GB iPhone 3G (and the same price $100 more than the 16GB iPhone 3G).
Palm would be wise not to price the Pre out of the reach of the average consumer, especially with so many of them now watching the family budget so closely.

Come on. Since when did people pay retail price for cell phones anyway. It could be $1200, but if Sprint gave a $1100 discount with new contracts it wouldn’t much matter, would it? We’ve even started a community over at http://www.SprintPre.net to chat about it.
Do you understand what “$399 with contract” means?
In any case, the rumor is probably just that, a rumor. Perhaps someone is trying to coerce Palm/Sprint to release the actual price level earlier :-p.
The 8GB iPhone is $199, and the 16 GB is $299. That makes the $399 Pre $200 more than the 8 GB and $100 more than the 16 GB.
Yeah fact checking!
The facts were checked, but my math wasn’t. A thousand apologies, Snitty.
Cracks me up that 1) the guy who started this rumor from all the way out in Russia is assumed to have credibility (even Nicholas concedes this by using the word “apparently”) just by predicting the death of a Motorola product and 2) if you stop and think, $399 makes sense for a smartphone *without* a contract discount. The iPhone without a contract costs $599 and $699!
snitty is right but thats not even the big issue. why was this almost perfect cell missing a memory card slot? who would want to use 1 of those usb memory cards that would stick out & damages if you leave it plugged in as an extra storage space? this cell is stuck with a 7.4 gb user available storage which wont be any close to enough. palm still did not officially release this they still have an option to remodel to add 1 it needs to be the ultimate amazing new gadget of our time. who can i forward this too to save this cells life for a full life usage that no one will ever get bored of?
The key question indeed is, “Where’s the extra memory slot?”
That is a major oversight on this phone.
That and the fact that it’s AGPS (instead of regular GPS) according to the press release on investors.palm.com
It will not be priced that high. Sprint will foot the bill like they did with Samsung’s Instinct. This device (OS aside) is huge for Sprint and will definitely help their bottom line and they’ll do whatever it takes to sell millions of them.
I’d pay $399 for it without feeling like I was getting the shaft. I’m not rich or anything, but I recognize that this is a sweet device.
I gotta agree with Gaines on this one. The iPhone is around $399(ish) if you buy it without a 3 year plan (which I don’t think you can do anyways). But the phone companies always subsides the prices. My guess is it will be around $199 with a 3 year plan like most of the next gen phones are now a days.
Oh fer crying out loud innumeracy laden lasses, US$399 is before Sprint applies their discounts…
I have the HTC TouchPro which started life at US$600…minus the automatica US$300 Sprint discount, minus the two months free (US$200), minus an additional 50 duckets…WHICH once you the mathematics are applied beyond rumor mongering, means I paid US$50 for the best touch based full qwerty keyboarded phone out (for now)…
Guys Should we be even fighting about the prices, till anyone have a official data on Sprint Prices.
I thought Best Buy leaked it would be $199 with contract and $299 without a contract?
