I would have to respectfully disagree. While it's true that theoretically the consumer might benefit from a unified app store, Samsung's job is not to give the consumer the theoretically ideal cross-platform experience but to earn as much profit as it can for itself.

The Samsung brand is extremely strong (something like #1 in the US for cell phones and TVs), and so it is logical that Samsung would not want to dilute its brand by pairing with Nokia and the like. It's too early to tell, but my guess is that the Samsung app store is not about profiting from the sales of apps, but to sell Samsung branded phones. One of the main advantages the iPhone maintains over a Samsung phone with the exact same specs is the existence of the ecosystem of iTunes and the App Store, in which it becomes much more valuable than just what you get out of the box. (even the 2G iPhone, which was revolutionary in and of itself, gained significantly from being part of the iTunes ecosystem).

The primary branding in the mobile phone world belongs to the manufactures and not the OS's (Windows Mobile notwithstanding). Most people outside of MobileCrunch have never even heard of Android, let alone S60. Hence the need for branded app stores.

That's natural. Many companies are looking to alternatives to Applestore, including carriers. But few people know there are some companies that commercialize advertising space inside apps. That's really very nice!

Peter's comments are more insightful than the post itself, well done. I agree distribution is getting better but also see the defraction getting worse. WM and Symbian are losing critical leadership, while developers and ISVs are left to their own to map long term strategy to immediate product functionality before the lights go out.

Falling walled gardens, fixed-rate data plans and more open/powerful handsets will lead to great app markets that defragment (disintermediate?) both the carries and the handset guys.

Everypoint and GetJar are both making progress on this front, but with different approaches. As a shameless plug, Everypoint's Nemo beta is now open to developers at http://everypoint.com.

"Nokia has been surprisingly mum on the S60 app store topic"

Dude, what???

Nokia has had Download! in their phones as their app store for ages...again, it might not have the visibility the Apple Store has had in the US, given the tyrant carrier behavior here.

And that is even before they decided to re-organize things under OVI (which has had a long and low-key roll out)...and will probably succeed where Apple blew it big time with .Me: convergence & cloud.

At least ask someone in the industry to check your hypothesis before writing...

While it may create some confusion, it also has the potential to simplify the experience of extending a mobile device for users that are not aware of all that is available to them on the platform.

To keep the Mobile Applications Marketplace from creating confusion, Samsung has the responsibility of ensuring they make clear which applications will run on which devices to help offset the fact they don’t control the platform.
