It was reported last week that Telstra’s Sol Trujillo had his HTC Touch Diamond running Windows Mobile 6.5 lifted off his person during MWC. And today APC is reporting that the device was remotely wiped of both OS and user data once the theft was realized according to an anonymous higher up at Microsoft. We’ve contacted Microsoft as well and will update if we hear otherwise.
I’m not really sure how I feel about this. Microsoft was able to completely wipe the device remotely? Hmm…
via APC

Remote wipe is standard for devices that sync with an Exchange server – including iPhones, Symbian Devices running “Mail for Exchange” etc. No conspiracy theories required!
Where’s the fun in that?!
this is actually really cool. IMO thieves shouldn’t be given free access to software and data :)
If its true then the person who stole it was very foolish. The first thing that he should’ve done was to remove the SIM card & then do a hard reset on the phone so that if there were any remote tracking app on the phone it would’ve been removed & due to SIM change after hard reset the owner wouldn’t have been able to send any commands to the phone!
Oh yes, and they also installed Vista on it…
Remotely of course
LOL
Sol Trujillo looks like he’s about to get hit by a bus.
Yet he doesn’t seem that upset about it…
People like to bash WinMo but it’s features like remote wipe that makes it such a good choice for business users. I’ve had to wipe a device that was stolen one myself, it was a comforting feeling knowing that not only would he not get the data but the first time he tried to activate it would be flagged as stolen. I was very happy to see remote wipe implemented in the iPhone Exchange Setup.
What does “wipe the OS” mean exactly? That it can no longer boot?
Surely it would be much safer to Brick it than wipe it
