First of all I would like to thank you for such a wonderful post, you have identified some good features that are essential but not included in many phone. When we talk about iphone, it is one of the best available in market, but that too does not willing to make our life easy.

[...] HARDWARE: 8 Little Things We Still Can’t Stand About the iPhone Lol… more things that would make me prefer to have Carolyn’s tiny cellphone over a huge overpriced crippled behemoth like the iPhone. Text messages are auto-split without telling the user? You can’t attach a picture to an email, or search it? The gestures they advertise don’t work everywhere? You have to use a bunch of clicks to save your battery? No custom themes? And of course, no adult applications: You’re a child by default, and Apple is your Mommy. Still can’t get over how these are followed like a cult.
Great article guys. You definitely hit on some of the finer, less noticeable quibbles some are having with the iPhone.

There are a few bigger issues worth mentioning. Like the fact that the iPhone plan is $30 in addition to the standard plan. While at the same time, you can pay $30 for the PDA plan with an HTC, BlackBerry or Samsung device and have tethering available to you.

The iPhone is not so much like the Bacon-Wrapped Scallop as it is the Styrofoam-Wrapped 13th Century Porcelain Chinese Vase. Drop your iPhone without a substantial case on the outside and your beautiful, scratch-free glass screen is sure to shatter. Glossy black finish? Nicked and scratched from normal pocket-wear. I had the 2G version and after several problems and 3 replacements, Apple replaced it the fourth time with the 3G model. I preferred the aluminum finish on the back of the 2G model much more.

No MMS!? You've got a phone that can do pretty much anything, but you can't send a damn photo of your dog from the beach to your friends back home. Unless, of course, they've got their email set up on their phone (which a lot of people do, so maybe that's what Apple was thinking).

A multimedia rocket ship that can't capture even a simple video or capture a decent photograph in less than sunlight conditions?

And the aforementioned complaint that everytime you connect it to a different computer, it wipes it clean. I had a 24" iMac at work and a 15" MacBook Pro at home with my girlfriend running a 13" MacBook and I couldn't snag music from any but the one at work because it's the one I set it up on. Sure, I could have done it at home, but then I'm back to ground zero and picking out my favorite music ALL over again. Thanks to Senuti, I was able to rip music FROM the iPhone/iPod to any computer and then put it right back on again. Oh yes Apple, someone has stormed that impenetrable castle wall.

And finally, the fact that the iPhone is essentially never yours. You rent it. It can never be used outside of an AT&T contract. It can never be "unlocked" and still function 100%.

At this point, I'm using a Nokia E51, but am soon switching to the E71 just for the sheer usability of the Nokia UI and the fact that it will do EVERYTHING the iPhone will do and more. And in a package equally as small, sexy and affordable. Best part? AT&T doesn't ever have to know it's a smart phone, I can use it worldwide and when I'm done with AT&T, I'll take it on over to T-Mobile or one of the other SIM carriers of my choice should I see fit.

AT&T and Apple have forged a tight bond with the iPhone. After the dust settled from the hundreds of thousands breaking down AT&T retail store doors seeking this sleek, electronic fantasia, it's more glitz and glam than a cell phone.

Regards,
Matthew

The search functionality to look up by # is there. Go to the Phone, keypad, dial the number.

If it's in your contacts it will tell you who it is.

OK another one - bluetooth.

I had a Sony Ericsson before, and it integrated amazingly with my Macbook. I could call directly from the address book on the MBP, set my computer up to do caller display on the monitor when the phone rang (and pause iTunes when I answered), use the internal speakers/mic as handsfree, browse the device from the PC and transfer images/texts/files wirelessly, and even go to screensaver and lock when i went to grab a coffee.

Now I have the iPhone (which I wouldn't change for any other phone), but it basically can't do any of this, except maybe the handsfree bit. So rubbish.

OK, small but massively annoying:

If you key in a number (not one of your contacts), then press call, but - oh no! - you've got one of the characters wrong! You quickly end the call, then want to go and edit the number you dialled before trying agiain. Nope, sorry. You have to enter the whole thing all over again from scratch!

Why oh why can't I click the arrow next to the number and have an option on that screen to edit the number? I have to write the number down on a piece of paper, then redial, or I have to add them as a contact, edit the phone number and then redial.

Ummm... me? I like the fact that messages popup on the lock screen. Allows for quick reading on the go. If you need to reply, you unlock and go....

That being said, maybe an option to de(activate) it would be nice, but whatever....

Here's my nitpick(s):

1) Turn on/off instantly the auto-correction. I live in France, so I send email in french and english. When I'm in French, everything is fine. Switch to English and it becomes a friggin' nightmare just to type a message. Several clicks later, it's disactivated, but what a pain in the ass.

2) Instant switching of languages. This is similar to #1, but hey. I'd like to switch dictionary languages instantly while typing a message. It makes things soooo much easier. All of my previous crappy phones could do this, come on!

Also, you mentioned that there aren't many reasons to jailbreak your phone anymore, what about tethering? You can only do it on a jail-broken phone, if I'm not mistaken.
