This is an iPhone that just gave up. Apparently this phone, owned by a fellow in Rome, overheated and fused two metal leads together, resulting in a fiery mess and a dead iPhone. There’s only one other report of this happening in Sweden.
Tim, the guy who got burninated, thinks it was the fluff in the crevices that did it. I doubt it. It was probably a bent pin that touched the wrong lead. More when he visits the iPhone store today.

They had a fault and were recalled last year:

The charger in your article is the usb wall plug, where as in the above photo its clearly the OTHER end which connects to the iphone.
Wrong end of the cable. The recall was for the part that plugs into the wall. The prongs were breaking off in the socket.
Pretty bad for the owner!
bonus points go to the trogdor reference
This is the exact thing that happend to my sisters plug. she didnt do anything about it yet, but could apple give her a refund??
I’m sure they’ll give your sister, and this guy, and the Swedish guy a refund, and post about it all over the internet. That is NOT a photo that makes me want to buy their phone. That said, only 2 (or three?) did this, out of how many million?
I guess even Apple has an occasional Lemon in its product mix. The Italian customer was probably more shocked than we are. At least his apps are transferable to a new device.
burninateing all the…iPhones? sucks for him though.
