Qik’s video streaming software began its life on the Nokia S60 platform, so it makes sense that a number of its recent big wins involve Finland’s finest. This morning, Qik is announcing that their application is now compatible with Nokia’s Share on Ovi media sharing service, and that it will be prominently featured in Nokia’s Ovi Store when it launches in a few months.
Qik users can get their content onto Share on Ovi from their handset while (or immediately after) the video is recorded, or from their desktop browser later on. From the handset, users simply select the “Send to Ovi by Nokia” option from the share menu; from the browser, sharing is done by clicking the “Ovi by Nokia” share widget, which sits alongside support for posting your content on Digg, StumbleUpon, Blogger, Facebook, Technorati, Del.icio.us, and Myspace. There’s no real advantage to posting your content on Ovi as opposed to solely Qik’s site, besides being able to keep all of your content in one digital basket. Competing video sharing service Flixwagon launched Share on Ovi support at the end of October.
What the competitors don’t have (at least as far as we can tell) is featured placement in Nokia’s Ovi Store. As shown in the screenshot above, Qik will be listed under Nokia’s “Recommended” applications when the Ovi Store launches in May. A small win at face value, but it’s actually quite important; Qik faces a good bit of fierce competition (Flixwagon, Kyte, and Ustream to name a few) in the mobile streaming field. With many of these competing services offering applications on the same platforms, it’s an all out battle for users here. When you’re striving for attention, getting a public nod from the world’s largest handset manufacturer is sort of a big deal.
I started un-following people who use Qik. They send out messages that they are live, but it sends you to an archived video every time. And it’s the most nonsensical content you will ever find.
Maybe they are just too new and not ready for prime time, but I find them to be the worst web 2.0 company around.
I tried all 3, Qik and Flixwagen have the advance of been able to store the video and upload it later.
Ustream has the best video quality.

That’s funny: At Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress 2008 I told Bhaskar Roy that his Qik should be part of Ovi. One year later it comes true.
Great job Qik team!!! This was long overdue. After having tried every mobile video app have settled down to using Qik – as it just works!
