Invites have begun to trickle out for a March 17th Apple event, at which they’ll be debuting iPhone OS 3.0. It has been about 8 months since the release of OS 2.0, and 6 months since Apple missed their self-imposed deadline for push notifications for background applications.
Will background apps be addressed? What about the oft-griped about lack of copy and paste? Will they polish up all those little things we still can’t stand? Tune back in on March 17th at 10 am PST to find out.

I’m not holding my breath on copy and paste or background apps, but it could happen.
My Sony Ericsson W760 have both copy&paste and background applications (yes I can listen to Internet radio and check my e-mails at the same time) What else does it have? … let me think … bluetooth A2DP, DUN, PAN? Yes. I can stream music from my phone to my car audio, I can use my phone as a 3G modem and I can share my desktop Internet connection with my phone. Amazingly, is not it? GPS? Yes. Video recording? Yes!!! Unbelievable!!! MMS??? Yes. (never used it actually). All possible video/audio formats support? Yes: RealAudio, RealVideo, Windows Audio/Video, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, H264, H263 etc.
Ohh, yeah and it is not even a smartphone.
Multiple simultaneous apps, but max 3 at a time instead of 1.
I meant not more than 3 at a time plz
I agree, I had a similar phone myself before, but the fact is, the utilization of my iphone is much better even with all those short comings, mainly due to its nice screen and better browser. I also have more fun due to the ability to install unofficial apps, or simply be able to ssh into it.
yeah but its a sony ericsson…
hey “Vlad”…you can take your piece of shit Sony Ericsson W760 and shove it up your asshole along with the cock that you prolly take…fuck youuu
@Mr. Hollywood. The “Springboard” is the name of the iPhone desktop. That’s the current name so if you read “something” about Springboard, you’re probably right.
support for bluetooth keyboard? ha ha ha! who am i kidding? they want you to peck away at that screen.
Seriously. HID profiles, please.
I have my fingers crossed for time travel capability :)

I’m hoping some of the requests from that site got fixed and that they’ve made some progress on MobileMe…. I want wireless synchronization for everything including music, onto the web. While MobileMe is ahead of some other companies, I think they still have a lot of improvement they can do. I think the easiest one to talk about would be native support for accessing your MobileMe files from the iphone without getting separate applications for it.
I hope they fix the picture messaging feature… or lack thereof
As long as they fix all the drop calls and horrible receptions issues I will be happy. In the end, all the cool apps are just nice-to-haves, but I still bought the iPhone as a PHONE.
Switching from Verizon and signed up for a 2 year contract was the worst decision I ever made
I live in the heart of Silicon Valley, not middle of nowhere. And as far as I know, all iPhone owners I know share similar drop call / bad reception issues, but not other AT&T subscribers with other phones.
@Ray – completely agree. Lost and dropped calls, spotty access to voicemail received a result of these lost calls things are going from bad to worse.
Thirdly! The dropped calls have to be addressed at some point. But this is an AT&T problem – not one to be corrected by the latest firmware update.
Background capabilities are at the top of my list. I can’t even get a simple reminder pushed to my phone. Hopefully they will find a way to manage battery life…
Actually, I think it’s a firmware issue. I noticed my calls usually drop when the phone switch from Edge to 3G or vice versa. During that split second switch, that’s when most of my drop calls happen.
Of course, not knowing the technical mechanics behind it, this could be a AT&T problem.
I have the exact same problems, and I live in Denmark (that would be Europe)…!
“worst decision I ever made”???
If the iPhone doesn’t make you happy, then you seriously need to watch this video…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoGYx35ypus
Driving on 101 from San Jose to Redwood City would get me about 3-5 dropped calls. Ridiculous.
im hoping to run android on the background…..
I hope this update allows me to make calls for longer than 20 seconds…
Does that mean iPod Firmware upgrade too?
Watch it be like the Pre, BEFORE the Pre even comes out.
Pre-Pre
Holding my breath (not that begging will change anything) that Apple adds copy + paste; email search; the same Internet-type navigation in email form (e.g., so I can turn my iPhone on the side); and, oh, flash integration.
I’m prayin’ for at least 1 app running in background ! Don’t take that wet dream aways plys !!!
I’m also wondering about this update for iPod Touch, but mostly trying to determine how much Apple wants to charge me this time for upgrades that should honestly come for free.
A2DP…that’s all I really care for. My bluetooth speakers are useless without A2DP and I’m stuck having to listen to my wife’s musical choices coming out of her Blackberry.
Since this is likely the last upgrade until the Pre comes out, this will determine if I keep or dump my iPhone.
Is this release of the update or announcement of what they’ll have in the update?
I don’t think we’ll see 3.0 released before a third generation iPhone is announced.
FLASH SUPPORT PLEASE!!!!
“And as far as I know, all iPhone owners I know share similar drop call / bad reception issues, but not other AT&T subscribers with other phones.”
My wife and I both have iPhones, and haven’t noticed any problems. These engineers using a testing lab say the iPhone’s reception is the same as the Nokia N73 and Ericsson P1:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/25/iphone-3g-reception-just-fine-say-curious-swedes/
Now, the above research doesn’t prove there isn’t a problem, not by a long shot, but until some scientific evidence to the contrary shows up, as an engineer my experience with other products such as cameras is we’re seeing what *can* arise when you combine a large user base and the internet.
Say we use a recent figure of 14M iPhones out there. If 99.5% (I figure I just made up, but that that would be very, very good for a consumer product of this complexity) of iPhones sold are defect free, then you’ve still got 70,000 people with defective products. All it takes is a small number of them to flood blogs and social networking sites with complaints.
Michael, you may live in an area where you constantly receive good 3G and/or Edge signal. As previously stated, I notice most drop calls occur during the Edge/3G network switch, which I believe could be fixed by a firmware update.
I actually noticed huge improvement from 1.x to 2.x, but still very bad compare to other phones.
I’m sorry your having problems, and I’m sure there’s large number of users experiencing dropped calls, including you. My response as an engineer was simply its impossible to judge a problem using anecdotal evidence.
A good test you could do would be to find a known boundary between Edge and 3G ,establish a phone connection, and then drive back and forth a hundred times and see how many times the phone call is dropped. Then repeat that test with other iPhones and other 3G mobile phones. That should give enough data to see make some educated guesses.
Wow, yeah, I’m sure he’ll get right on that.
I own both iPhone and SonyEricsson W760 (3G as well) From my own experience I can tell you that SE constantly outperforms iPhone in terms of data connection quality and stability. In my house iPhone does not even have EDGE connection, SE has strong 3G on second floor and strong EDGE on a first floor.
The use of Flash and a cut & paste option would make me a happy camper…
How bout the ability to add contact details to SMS and fwd an SMS? That would be a good start. Copy & Paste would be an even better one, and flash please.
iPhone is the best thing since sliced bread but it has it faults. Please fix one of these:
1. Copy/paste.
2. Send attachments from email like two pictures from the same email.
3. Video capture.
4. Better battery usage.
5. Less call drops.
6. Flash.
7. Improve typing auto correct.
I just want a new app that will shoot whipped cream out the microphone hole at the bottom for my french toast.
And please deactive the keyboard clicks on default. Some people just don’t get it – it drives me crazy!
Sitting in the Caltrain sounds like a hailstorm.
we need bluetooth working send recieve files.. yes there is email but thats usless emaila nd having to have a net connection for a picture or a sound file.. its stupid apple cripple everything i cant take videos with the camera.. stupid 2mp is usless..
hoepfully apple will fix all the crippled functions, i will move from apple to nokia they dont cripple everything for stupid reasons
Good. iPhone has the worst OS i’ve ever used.
Hopefully they’ll make it easier to arrange app icons. But i doubt it. Apple isn’t a software company. They’re a gadget company.
Not holding my breath for any spectacular software upgrades from a company focused on marketing and making things shiny.
wow… how can you bash the iphone OS when all your worried about is arranging apps. how is it not easy now? you drag and drop them wherever you want them to go. I can’t think of a better or easier way to do that. Tell me a cell phone that runs a better operating system…
i’m obviously referring to moving apps 2 or more pages.
and that is not ALL i’m “worried about”. i figured i didn’t need to repeat ALL THE OTHER problems already stated above.
better mobile OS? Symbian, Palm/ACCESS
i agree with lazysupper… i can be a bit of a task to arrange icons when you have a bajillion apps across 6 or 7 screens… especially when you try to drag them right to left and have that occasional shift that throws everything else out of alignment…
Please Mr. Jobs,
1) Open the calendar
2) Allow background apps
3) More billing options, subscriptions
4) Give developers more transparency on approval criteria
5) Complete push functionality
Will be exciting to see what’s in the package. Lots of people focused on this one.
Jailbreak your phone it’s worth it. I wonder if the 3.0 release will effect jailbroken iphones?
dev team will unlock and jailbreak it as always it will be a matter of time fo course, lets see how long it takes.. but people shouldent have to jailbreak apple have such a good phone and they cripple everything.. you shouldent have to jailbreak and void the worranty then recieve no help from apple and have to pretewnd to them its not jailbroken… if 3.0 still keeps the iphone crippled im getting a nokia n96 with everything NOT crippled puts both iphone models to shame and no worry about jailbreaking for apps that the phone should already have, poor excuses apple make for disabling it so they can make more money instead of LISTENING TO CUSTOMER WANTS… so no 2.3 first straight from 2.2.1 to 30? i wonmder when they will release this if review is on the 17th.. 2..XX did not last long.. most updates where in a few weeks and simply fixed bugs. every other week was a new firmware release.. and also will app store apps still work on 3.0?
I hear you, we shouldn’t have to jailbreak it it kills me that after I did I realized all the good stuff you could do and that Apple was being big brother for no reason. If they opened it up they would have a whole new market share. Its like telling your kid to not do something then they go ahead and do it anyway. If they simply opened up the ability for video I would have never jailbroken it They would have made $26.80 from me easily by the time I was done. Anyhow, I didn’t know about ssh either that right there was just the feather in the cap. The ability to teather was the best thing since sliced bread. I think I’ll wait to update my iPhone to 3.0 when it hits because the way I have it setup right now is perfect!
yes i have that also.. ssh changed boot logo changed sliders ive got a big boss fantasy theme with a changing picture every 20 seconds otu of 650 pictures ibluetooth which doesent really work very well ispazio in cydia you can send/recieve files im told it works better on 2.2 firmware i have 2.2.1 and send to another iphone is very buggy doesent work well.. i have mirc video recorder snes/nes emulators vlc player mms i changed my icons, my safari is a firefox icon :D and i deleted them pointless applications like weather stock? when will i ever need that ? i mean for some its very usefull but not me i should be able to delete it,. and change ringtones withotu having to ssh or pay for a ringtone?? whats that about? on other phones i can simply press options on any mp3 and use it as a ringtone.. but apple nooo they want you to PAY squeeze more money out of you, and of course if you talk about it on the apple website they delete your posts like your a criminal for buying their product!!!! i think if it was nto for jailbreak and unlock a lot less people would own the iphone now and they condem the very people that make them money.. if it was not for jailbreak i would of taken my phone back ages ago or given it away for one with nothing crippled.. if 3.0 is disapointing i am going to change phones for a company that does not look for any way to suck money out of their scustomners and cripple everything with poor excuses but enable everything they can to make the phone BETTER.
winterboard and its a good phone for watching movies on the airoplane the sound is su[prisingly loud and you can hear it.
lots of good jailbreak apps including ssh winterboard cycorder nes snes emulators i can upload a ringtone quick and easy therre is now even a bluetooth app wich lets you send and recieve files but doesent work very well still very buggy but ive managed to get it working twice.. sbsettings where you can see phones processes and stop them and hide icons on the springboard. you can also delete unwanted icons like weather and stock from ssh which for me are pointless.. if it wasent for jailbreak iw ould of thrown away my iphone AGES ago.. apple ignore you if you talk about jailbreak they delete your posts their only consern is taking customers money and not giving them what they want because it might mean less money for them.. if 3.0 is still disapointing i am going to swap my iphone for something else i mean 2.XX firmware where all bug fixes and pretty usless.
Bet they will update google maps to include latitude!
What about finally implementing a subscription mechanism? Some developers stay away because the technology (aka: costs) of providing their service cannot support unlimited use for life, for a fixed one-time price – not an affordable one, anyway.
If they could charge less up front, but continue generating revenue over time from each user (to support the service) this would open the floodgates for more complex and useful apps, while keeping them affordable.
Advertising in the app is not a solution – the paltry, uncertain returns don’t justify the resources needed to create the app. It would be much better if there was a mechanism so that users could continue to pay for functionality they find useful.
Comments, anyone?
im wondering why apple are skipping 2.3 and 2.4? jump straight to 3.0 with not much done with 2.XX but bug fixes. i mean in 1.XX we saw more then bug fixes.. will be intresting to see what it has and how long it takes to jailbreak and unlock this new fw. make it worth having a iphone
It took me a year before i decided to Jailbreak my iphone and i still am happy with it.
I could probably care less about the copy/paste as long as they add MMS and get rid of that recockulous viewmymessage.com BS! I dont get that many MMS messages, but when i do, i really dont want to jump through hoops just to get to them.
Oh and video recording. I still cant believe that i had to jailbreak in order to get that. Even the crappiest Nextel records video.
I hope 3.0 has some good updates. I read something about Spingboard (as a rumor). It really has to be as good or better that what i did by jailbreaking.
