Outside of the iPhone and the G1, very few phones fuel the forum flamewars like the BlackBerry Storm. As the first touchscreen BlackBerry, it was bound to have some haters. Whether you’ve been enamored since day one or a zealous skeptic since the beginning, the phone has one fault that is undeniably unfortunate: no WiFi.
There’s nothing that can be done on the WiFi front for the original Storm – but what about take two?
As with any phone that sells reasonably well, rumors of a follow-up are already abound; According to SlashGear, RIM is already busy crackin’ away at the BlackBerry Storm 2, complete with WiFi. That all sounds perfectly reasonable (hell, we could have assumed as much) – but the release window seems a bit crazy: according to their source, they’re aiming at September of this year.
The Storm was released in November 2008. If the Storm 2 were to hit the shelves this September, that’s roughly 10 months between the original product and the followup. Sure, it’s possible (phones generally take a year and a half to go from concept to consumer, but they could have been working on Storm 2 for months prior to the original Storm’s release) – but even Apple, king of planned obsolescence, puts a full year of padding between their handset releases. Does RIM really have the gall to outdate one of their biggest ventures before it even hits its first birthday?

lets not worry about them releasing the Storm 2 10 months later rather than, 12….who cares.
What we should worry about is what they will fix/change. The Storm is a complete failure. If the Storm 2 resembles the Storm 1 in any way, it will fail too.
What good will wifi be if the Storm 2 runs the same awful browser? Who cares about what it can do if I can’t reliable hit the “z” or “p’ keys on its unique but lame screen?
Dude??? Complete failure??? What dimension are you from???
Let me guess… You own an iPhone and you submitted this from your wifi hotspot connected Macbook while sipping on your Starbuck’s Venti Mocha Latte.
Get a clue…
No, actually I am a HUGE Blackberry fan (I run the 8830, wife has a Curve) and long time Verizon subscriber.
I wanted SO badly to love the Storm, but the truth of the matter is that it SUCKED! I like having a functional phone more than I like being a Blackberry fan boi.
You might be the only person on earth that doesn’t think the Storm was an epic FAIL.
I LOL’d not going to lie.
I hope they also change the screen size and make it a little bigger let’s say 3.8″ :)
Anyway, if they are in a rush to release this new version, it means Storm didn’t come close to RIM’s sales expectations.
I think that the storm is a realy good built phone and the design of it i prefer it over any other phone out there. It feels good on the hand and if it wasn’t for incomplete software and the click screen i think it would have been the best phone out there. But we all know that i just mention the whole phone there but then again the estetic is the best i’ve seen on a phone.
At last…a great phone with no WiFi, is not the best idea. Even my old PSP have Wifi.
There is no storm 2, there is going to be the 9520 Storm that has WI-FI, Rogers Canada already has some promotions ready. Same phone, probably same software, same problems!
I’ll be slightly upset if they come out with a Storm 2 that soon, although more then likely I will upgrade. God willing they improve on more then just wi-fi. I can fucking live without wi-fi. I don’t know why people bitch. 3G speeds are just FINE for normal surfing, if you’re so antsy to go on a website that doesn’t load in under five seconds on the Storm, than you’re a nerd. A non-sexual having, mountain dew drinking, wOw playing nerd.
’nuff said.
I totally agree with the editing feature in Black Berry Storm. I’ve been struggling with the text feature of Iphone especially if you are used to
Nokia or Sony Ericsson brands.Wait till you see the integrated and WiFi feature and the improve SureTouch feature. These new features will
definitely redeem Storm.
Btw, I just want to share this information I found which is definitely useful for Storm users. There is an All Blackberry Storm Apps that do not
require any compatibility mode. It has a Cool Call Blocker application, useful tip calculator, Typing speed application, a bartender app that tells you what drinks you can make based on what you have in your kitchen and even a super-quick and bright flashlight app!
This is a must have for Blackberry Storm fanatics!
I had a one night stand with the Storm and I still can’t figure out what is the target audience: people who are looking for an iPhone alternative of business men?
Because at the moment it’s kind of none of the above… not as elegant as the iPhone and because of the virtual keyboard (which I didn’t like) – not as productive as other BlackBerry models…
