No need for q-tips, you heard it right: INQ Mobile will soon announce a phone with exclusive twitter-connectivity just in time for the holiday season. INQ, the makers of the Skype Phone, plan to really open up the twitter flood-gates, 140 characters at a time, using a mobile internet connection versus Twitter’s own SMS service. Seeing the Twitter boom, INQ plans to manufacture an inexpensive phone that replaces texting with tweeting.
“This can really help open up and drive Twitter use on mobile when usage becomes part of your data package like on the PC”, said Frank Meehan, chief executive of INQ in an interview with Reuters.
I’m not sure if Meehan owns a smart-phone or not, but mobile connectivity has gone hand-in-hand with Twitter since its inception. In fact, that is one key points of the success of twitter; tweeting from anywhere at any time has really made the service explode.
This product seems like quite the grandiose venture on paper, but I can’t figure out how this will succeed and, moreover, who this will be appealing to.
Why this product will most likely fail (whale):
- Selling a social-network branded phone gives a sense of limited functionality, albeit true or not.
- Relying on Twitter, a shaky-at-best third-party service, could be seen as damaging to the quality of the phone or service. Who likes playing with broken toys?
- Having dozens of smart-phone marketplaces offering free or inexpensive twitter clients, the presence of mobile Twitter services is flooded and the storm won’t be letting up any time soon.
- The phone only appeals to those who use twitter on a regular basis, and most regular users have either found a mobile app or use Twitter’s mobile service (that is quite solid as it is).

Agree with your last point. Nowadays, we could easily find an twitter application for mobile phone.
so the only selling point is connecting to twitter. lol okay… doesn’t seem super appealing, even as a twitter person.
wow, excellent if the phone is ready, i will buy one for testing and add into my online twitter marketing lesson too. and secondly, i believe that a lot fo the iphone SDK apps programmer will also add it to app store too. it’s an amazing idea.
I use snaptu twitter on my INQ1 does the the job for me.
