AI is reporting that Best Buy will be offering insurance on the iPhone 3G S when it goes on sale next week. Current Black Tie Protection plans range between $7 and $10, but protection for the iPhone 3G S will be significantly more. You’ll have to shell out $15 per month or $180 a year to protect your precious against drops, spills and whatever else you can throw at it. So who’s going to Best Buy to get their iPhone 3G S?

That’s a rip off. My bf was getting charged $14.99 a month for his 3G. He just canceled it and we got apple protection plans. Just a one time payment for 2 years of protection. Would be the same for 3gs. AT&T has a bundle going on where you can get a 3g phone ,a car charger, a case or some kind of accessory, and a protection plan for a little over $200. It’s a great deal!
AppleCare != accidental damage coverage
just make sure he doesn’t drop it or get any liquid damage, cause your one time protection doesn’t protect against that.
Wow!!! Best Buy makes out like a bandit under that program. At that rate, they will collect $360 from each user during the course of their 2 year AT&T contract. Even if as many as 10% of the phones need to be replaced outright and we double the cost for other less major potential repairs, Best Buy makes a profit of $240 per customer, on average.
There’s another option for coverage – SquareTrade. SquareTrade’s iPhone warranty DOES cover liquid damage (including immersion), drops, and other accidental damage from handling.
SquareTrade is much less expensive than Best Buy. Our new warranty pricing will be up next week, but the new 3gs warranty will be priced at $120 for the 32gb and $96 for the 16gb (after our current 20% ongoing discount). That’s one-third of Best Buy’s price or less.
Our warranty is pretty popular – there’s a long discussion thread about it on the MacRumors forum if you’re looking for a discussion of it as well.
Cheers

black tie protection has always been 14.99 for the iphone. applecare only covers normal wear and tear at best and theres a deductable. black tie covers almost everthing so it isnt so bad.
this is true, but also consider this.
at&t allows you to upgrade your iPhone one year from the start of the contract for the upgrade price, if of course you start another two year contract. so basically for a little bit more, you could have brand new iPhone, that could very well be (based off the fact that Apple seems to release of a new iphone every year) a lot better than what you had. so in my opinion, save your money. :-)
buy an otterbox case for your iphone…and never worry about it ever again….dropped my 1st gen otterbox protected iphone off a ladder 2 stories up…onto concrete…no damage at all. After almost 2 years with the phone and most of that protected with the case, i only had 2 dead pixels…not to bad.
What a rip off! i say just pay more care to your phone!
devil

Just love the new 32gb iPhone. Ultimate gadget for me. Nice post. Thanks.
