The “Howard who?” jab is unnecessarily provocative, but it helps illustrate a point. According to a leaked internal memo, courtesy of Alley Insider, the Sirius XM iPhone app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since its release last Thursday. All the assumptions that “no one” would download the app because of its lack of Howard Stern (and MLB and NFL), it seems, were just slightly off-base. (Perhaps more than that.)

Now Sirius XM needs the free trial-people who downloaded the app to actually subscribe to the service. I mean, 500,000 downloads is nothing to sneeze at, but it’s only so helpful if these people turn around and then subscribe to the service. The $13-a-month streaming-only subscription isn’t a bad deal when you consider all the content you’d be getting, but now Sirius XM has to compete with the likes of Pandora and whatnot.

God, remember all those dumb logos in anticipation of the Sirius-XM merger? Oh, memories.

  • You’re a dope…500,000 downloads because it’s a free App…just like you said. When they actually turn into subscriptions, then you have something to blog about in the basement of your mom’s house.

I don’t think there was a fear of downloading, it’s the fear of people not buying the premium subscription after downloading.

I already had a Premium Subscription, downloaded the APP and saw it didn’t have Howard, haven’t loaded it up since.

By the way, where’s your crony Kyle? I miss him.

    • ok, lets do the math

      500,000 in a week
10% keep it after free trial (low estimate)
      @ $13 a month

$650,000 a month from people in the last week

      • That 10% retention figure is EXTREMELY HIGH and wishful thinking.

Sirius-XM will be lucky to get 1% retention.

      • Does that 10% include current subscribers like myself, just without the premium package?…what do you figure is the percentage of that percentage? Because that’s not 13.00/month, that’s only 2.99 additional.

I’m sorry to tell you, but your “math” is bogus. There are too many factors on how this can be broken down that none of us are privy too.
Let’s leave the statistical analysis to the experts that have the data in front of them.

My point is simple though, if this APP included Howard, that “10%” would be much much higher. I wouldn’t dare give a percent though, I know better than pretending to know facts I know nothing about…I just point out the obvious.

  • Its only the shorters and the likes of street.com and 24/7 wall st who are bombarding the airways with negative propaganda about satellite radio. Of cause they are doing this cuz they have the most to lose..and they will lose their jobs in the long term due to the success of SIRI XM. Ha Ha . Greed filled shorters and false propaganda polluting the media and hurting the satellite radio industry for now, The old adage the cream will rise to the top will prevail. YES. SIRI LONG

  • I’d be willing to bet most of those people had no idea you couldn’t get Howard, MLB, or NFL when they downloaded the app. I was going to grab it but when I heard about the lack of the most compelling channels I wondered “why bother?”

  • Howard Stern is an idiot and passed boring over 20 years ago. He hasn’t said anything new since the mid 80’s. I’m a premium online subscriber and I have Sirius radio in my truck and never listen to him.

  • I downloaded it, realized I had to pay extra $3 a month even though I have life time subscription that included online subscription.

    Uninstalled it!

Went back to using wunder radio to listen to my XM channels without additional monthly fee.

I wonder if this app is the most downloaded and immediately uninstalled app. Look at the total rating.

  • Forget howard, bring on playboy radio!!!!!! :)

  • lets think in terms of next year we have a winner siri…………………………markets got every thing down…………..2010 we will make money siri

  • Did anybody else get an email today from XM saying their prices are going up another $1.98 per month for a “U.S. Music Royalty Fee”?

  • Well said, Alan !!
I’m no “daytrader”, and I put my money on this horse. Btw, has anyone given thought to the future of a possible “SSBC” (Sirius Satellite Broadcast Network)? Even if not, Siri WILL be a winner.

  • I love comments like this?

“Howard Stern is an idiot and passed boring over 20 years ago. He hasn’t said anything new since the mid 80’s. I’m a premium online subscriber and I have Sirius radio in my truck and never listen to him.”

If you never listen to him how do you know he hasn’t said anything new in 20 years and passed boring?

It amazes me how people who “never listen” seem to know everything about his show?

Anyway this download number means nothing for sure. It’s FREE (so is an animated dog licking your screen to clean it) and a huge number of people were like me, downloaded it, realized Stern wasn’t on it and never opened it again. Pocket Tunes is 9.99 and given me every Sirius station perfectly.

Look at the ratings in the App store, I think the rating is a 1 or 2 and 90% of the comments reference it being worthless without Stern. Usage and subscriptions are what matters.

  • Howard Stern being proped up by I wonder who. I was shocked to hear how much Howard Stern got paid. What a rip off… Glad Howard is out of this deal! I think Siri management is working smarter. Its about time :)
