And why exactly does the GPS in the iPhone suck? I’ve been wondering this myself as I’ve experimented with HTML 5 geolocation in Safari as the GPS often says I’m across the river from my actual location.

Is it skimping on the hardware inside and a better GPS could be included? Or that the case is somehow shielding it from a totally accurate signal?

I said printed maps because the built-in feature often distracts the hell out of me while driving. The point was just that you don’t get the voice turn-by-turn navigation that you pay for.

Wait–”printed” google maps? Is there something wrong with using the built in google maps directions feature?

I just downloaded AT&T Navigator on my iPhone and it works great with turn by turn. I had been using this on my Blackberry and, as most things, it works even better on an iPhone.

This is a new app that was just released this week.

Thanks for the write-up, I was wondering about the quality and pros/cons of this app and the service. I’m off to check out Telenav next, hoping that Navizon won’t take too long to get something out.

TomTom’s use of Tele Atlas data in the US is the weak link in that package. Any product using Tele Atlas data in the US is an epic fail.
