When it became clear that HTC’s oh-so-pretty Sense UI wasn’t going to make it to the G1 by any official means, we figured it wouldn’t be too long before the goods leaked and an unofficial port was made. Hell, we outright said so.
Less than a week has passed since then, but a pair of Italian hackers has already managed to jam the final Hero ROM onto the G1. Now, the G1’s packing a bit less muscle than the new guy (192 MB of RAM as opposed to 288, for one), so it’s not quite as buttery, and the port has its share of glitches – but progress is progress, right?
This build features a ton of new widgets, Facebook support in the address book, and visual overhauls across the apps. Oh, and Flash in the browser – but who cares about that, right?
Dying to get this on your G1? Here’s the first step.

I have had the Hero rom on my G1 since Haykuro ported it over a month or two ago. Its pretty but loses its appeal with the slowness. I see they are making it faster, plus this one is official so its faster than the beta we had. Overall not bad but I’ll stick with my lightning quick ION based Cyanogen rom.
it looks incredibly slow
HTC Sense is the slowest interface ever, actually anything HTC makes is so slow.. check out when he dragged the clock to the tool bar.. look how slow it was.. and do not just tell me because it is a BETA version. Its not the first time HTC is trying to do such thing.. they did it on Windows Mobile 6.1 with their touch-responsive TouchFLO that actually has nothing to do with responsivity. I thought back then that Windows Mobile sucks and slow.. it turned out that HTC has the worst software engineers ever, I bet you if Mac puts its hands on a piece of hardware like that, it will make it glow. I’m not saying I am a big fan of the iPhone. I tried every single phone and I am pretty sure that so far HTC has the worst phones ever.
