Well, iPhone OS 3.1 Beta just went live on Apple’s developer center and, as usual, it’s a quest to figure out what has changed. Our lovely developer friends have already started tearing it apart in search of that hidden gem detailing the iPhone 4GFP (The FP stands for “Face punch”), and we’re keeping tabs on what they find.

As far as we can tell, it’s almost entirely developer-oriented stuff.

New stuff:

  • Around 15 new OpenGL toys for handling 3D models
  • VideoEditorController API, which should let third party apps call up the video editing UI
  • Video picker API, goes hand-in-hand with the above
  • Plenty of obligatory “It seems faster!” reports
  • Some are claiming that MMS is now enabled by default, though still not functioning properly on AT&T. Seems strange to us that this would come via an OS update and not a carrier file update.

Let us know what you uncover, and we’ll add it to the list.

  • Just playing around I’ve noticed two changes:

    1. You can now paste phone numbers into the phone app’s dialer. This wasn’t possible under the 3.0 firmwares. A neat feature is that it will convert alphanumeric phone numbers into a real phone number when pasting (e.g. 1-800-FLOWERS becomes 1-800-356-9377).

    2. The phone vibrates once when going into icon-wiggle mode. Handy to let you know of any accidental activations I suppose.

    Anything else?

  • MMS is now enabled on AT&T!

  • Is this just an Apple fanboy site or what?
Am I the only one that thinks so?

  • Did this fix anyones confused icons or broken camera roll? It did for me. Could have just been the update process, hadn’t restored, or jb’d. No idea, glad its fixed now. Thanks for the beta so early.

  • Any word on whether or not this breaks the tethering hack?

  • Nick!

I have the camera roll bug too. My 100APPLE folder is jacked up, so i can’t take any new videos or pictures.

Did you jailbreak your previous iPhone? I thought this bug was from something I did when I was jailbroken.

  • mickerlodeon, the tethering still works, gives you a popup telling you to contact att to enable, still works though, posting this via a live connection

iamse7en, i don’t think so, i had a clean phone, went through betas early on, transfered over from a 3G to a 3GS, but this just started last couple of days. camera not working, icons going buggy etc. may have been a size issue, over 1100 images in the camera roll.

  • Thanks, but that app sounds exactly like DiskAid. I’m able to navigate to the DCIM folder, but I cannot delete the 100APPLE dir. I could delete the 999APPLE dir, but not 100APPLE. DiskAid seems to think it’s in use by an app on my phone. Either that or permissions issue… ?!

I’ll try PhoneView as well (which is the new name for MegaPhone), but I doubt it will make it work.

  • Any rumors on a GPS fix. Don’t know if it is 3.0 or 3GS, but my GPS is all over the map. It worked great with 3G with the old software. If there are no admissions coming up soon I will need to return my phone with the 30 days and get another one.

    • Bummer. I haven’t had any problems with the GPS function on the iPhone. Perhaps a resync/system wipe is in order with iTunes. Are you thinking it could be a hardware issue? Good luck.

  • Are they going to fix the Gps problem i mostly use gps and now im stuck because i updated to 3.0 , who the hell releases an update without confirming all of its fetures are working , thats apple

  • I really hope the mms works right now because it wast something that really POed me wen the phone first came out. if theres any new news email me at msapp2@yahoo.com Im trying to update to 3.1 now

  • does anyone know when this update will be released to the public.

    • Probably in late July / early August, but no one really knows for sure. You can take your release date guess on my website for a chance to a $50 iTunes card.

  • Ultimate-Gadgets.co.uk has cool gifts and gadgets for any occasion including a large range of Christmas gifts, Valentine’s gifts, wedding gifts and fathers day gifts at low cost price’s that will blow you away! All item’s have FREE shipping!

  • Voice control now works fully over bluetooth in 3.1.

Something I find very useful in the car and something I have been waiting for.

    • How does it function via bluetooth? Does one still need to hold down the ‘Home’ button on the iPhone, or can one control the activation of Voice Control entirely via the bluetooth headset?

      • It works completely over the headset. Hold down the headset’s button for a second, then wait for the ‘beep beep’ to give your command.

        • Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like a much-welcome improvement, especially for us Californians (headset laws and all).

  • so what is up with all these torrents of the beta 3.1 and what is the nig deal about the 3.1?

  • when is 3.1 release date?

  • Does the 3.1 beta have wireless bluetooth, I.e. sending? (like the 3gs?)

  • Does anyone know if the update includes pic-bridge? That’s one thing I hate about this phone. My 4 year old samsung A900 prints pictures via Bluetooth but my iPhone doesn’t.

  • Will the update let u be able to use music as your SMS tone yet?

  • Just got my first iPhone, which I had to purchase for app development. iPhone is way over-hyped and very disappointing – long on form, short on function. For example, while every other mobile phone in the world permanently shows the time and date in the status bar, iPhone shows only the time (the date shows only in locked mode). And since we pay for text messages per 160 characters, a character counter while composing messages would have been nice. Sorry Apple, but my BlackBerry leave iPhone in the dust…

    • That’s your example?! Dude, that’s so lame. Your app development is probably lame too. Go back to your old school Blackberry, and leave iPhone development to the big boys with a real app store.

      • Hey “Dude” Dingbow – thank you so much for your valuable and intelligent contribution to this forum. It really helps.

        • Gah, the BlackBerry is the bain of my existence! I can’t stand the fact that I have to configure yet ANOTHER piece of horrid software just to get Exchange sync. Not to mention the limitations such as no choice of carrier (iPhone can be unlocked, Windows Mobile is everywhere), horrible desktop software, horrible server software, EXPENSIVE all around, dated OS and hardware… OMG I HATE BLACKBERRY DEVICES!!!!!

I’ve been using mobiel devices for over a decade. I held onto a BlackBerry for about 2 months before switching to a PocketPC and have never looked back. Now I have an iPhone and a WM 6.5 device. Both smoke any BlackBerry in form and function. The BlackBerry is to mobile phones as AOL is to ISPs. You should just say no, regardless how popular it may be.

  • hey
i reckon FLASH SUPPORT ! AND UNLOCK THE SEND& RECEIVE BLUE TOOTH FOR IPHONE 3G!!!

  • I am a Corporate user who has been exposed to using other mobile phones that support Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync such as the Nokia E71, HP iPAQ 901 and Palm Treo Pro; all of which synchronizes my Coprporate Email, Calendar, Contacts and Tasks. I now have an iPhone 3GS, which also supports Exchange ActiveSync, but does not support synchronizing my “Tasks”. Would the iPhone Firmware 3.1 address the shortcoming of Syncing “Tasks” and possibly “Notes” with Microsoft Exchange 2007 ?

  • I am not a developer but a normal iphone user having problems with PUSH. The iphone does not push in sleep mode. Is there something in the pipeline to improve push in OS 3.1? thanks

  • Ive recently got an iphone 2g just to see how I was going to like it before I decided to make the jump into the 3G or 3GS, So far the phone is a joy to have. There are a few things about it that I can’t stand but I don’t think I will be looking back any time soon. MMS, I was so mad when I got the phone and found out that it didn’t have it. I almost wanted to flush it down the pot. Bluetooth, Man what a shame… I used it for so many things. Sending, and recieveing everything and then my headset. I cussed for days about that. GPS.. not sure about everyone else but, I used it for finding my way around. I have no sense of direction and it was the one thing that I loved about my BB and the LG’s that I had. Yes I never really got into the whole iPhone deal until I picked it up and actually messed around with it. I don’t think I’ll ever go back! I just think that if your going to make a product when everything else has this as already as default you would take it and run and make it a million times better than they did, not over look the fact that you have a new product and lure people in to buy a more expensive type and still haft to wait for an update… it really blows. APPLE WHAT R U THINKING?

So can anyone help me out with updateing my OS to 3.1 Beta? Where can I DL it and where do I go from there?

Remember: I’m new to the iPhone and have no clue where to look, Ive googled and waited and waited for the dang update and I cant wait anymore…. I WANT MY MMS!! AND I WANT IT NOW!! Email me @: Jenny5685@yahoo.com

    Thanks guys!

  • Could someone who has used the beta version of the os 3.1 please tell me if it allows you to delete single call entries on the phone call Log without having to delete the whole damn lot. I love my iPhone but this basic function was left out in the 3.0 update which for me was a disappointment even then. With this feature on the os 3.1 my iPhone will truely be complete. Many thanks in advance.

  • Well, some websites are saying 3.1 will be released on September 9th, and others are now saying the release – or availability of MMS by AT&T – is now set for September 25th. I wonder what the real story is?
