We all hope that eventually AT&T will get things together and out a tethering plan for the iPhone. But most of us are also nervous what AT&T is going to charge. We’ve heard everything from $40 to $60, but now one site is stating that AT&T told them directly all the details. We’re doubtful but wouldn’t be surprise if the cost ends up being close to what this site is stating.
Only AT&T (and Verizon) would charge $55 extra to allow your computer access to the so-called unlimited data already included in your monthly plan. That cost wouldn’t surprise us. But why we’re still skeptical AT&T told Appmodo directly all the secret plans outside of an embargo sealed with blood. Eventually someone will simply guess the tethering plan’s cost and become the Internet’s AT&T oracle. Our guess? $40.
UPDATE: An AT&T PR flack just hit us up with their official stance on this matter.
I am on the AT&T team. Touching base regarding your post this morning: “Rumor: iPhone tether plan to be $55 per month, coming in September.” Just wanted to reiterate:
· Any rumor that we have settled on a price for tethering is false.
· There will be a charge for the tethering plan, but we have not yet determined what it will be.
· We will offer a tethering plan for the iPhone, but have not yet announced a date.
· We will offer MMS later this summer.Best,

That is cool man, but do you think $40+ is a bit too much to pay?
I am bit skeptic about the speeds tho..
Haha apple sucks donkey balls.
Yet another reason I’m thinking of bolting from my iphone (and At&t’s expensive plans) for the Sprint everything plan and the Tour.
I don’t believe Sprint’s everything plan includes tethering, so I’m not sure what you’d be gaining here unless you’re after the unlimited voice…
True, it doesn’t include tethering. But, I believe that’s a far less expensive add-on than this price range. Thing is, for $69.99 I get unlimited texting, 450 minutes, and speedy EVDO reva, on a better network.
Also, I talked to retentions. They’re willing to give me pick-3 and 900 minutes for the same price. I also can get a 25% corp discount with Sprint.
I do like the iphone though, and I already use pdanet to tether.
Just not happy about At&t’s price gouging.
Why would the iPhone tethering plan cost more than AT&T’s normal smart phone tethering?
Everyone seems to think the iPhone has some special pricing plan, but it doesn’t. AT&T charges $30 for data and an extra $30 for tethering on a number of phones. I expect the iPhone tethering cost to be the same.
I hope both people who decide to use the plan enjoy it.
i have it for free right now, I wonder how they will/or when they will turn it off?
Hopefully it’ll cost the same as other smartphone plans, which is around $30 but knowing AT&T, expect to pay a little more. They love squeezing everything out of iPhone customers. http://ziggytek.com/
That’s nice. Now, where’s that MMS?
September huh? Well at least they gave us a free 90 day trial…
I wish someone at AT&T would explain to me the definition of “unlimited data plan”
Just so I am clear, this is in *addition* to the $30 iPhone data plan? As in it’ll be $75/month for Data+tethering?
to Pile on…
$30 a month is painful… At least a $10 monthly iPhone tax.
$40-55 a month for ‘unlimited data+tethering’ actually hurts, but is a minor uptick in the twinge every month, especially when my MacBook is sucking copious amounts of bandwidth….
(and for me, my city WiFi subscription would end… saving me $20 spent on almost useless bandwidth (the WiFi is solid, but the upstream interconnects to the net are saturated, and useless… it’s as if the entire town of Minneapolis is sucking through a fractional T1)
$75-85/month… Outright Assault… Again, it’s beating up on the ‘first-mover’ instead of a offering a ‘Grand Opening Sale’ (if 20million to spend 15 a month, or 1 million to spend 55 a month… and only about 5 million use it ‘to capacity’ either way… which is the better economic model?)
If ATT could offer Apple quality, I’d consider it… but to be honest, their current 3G isn’t even better than other telcos… let alone worth a $50 a month premium for ‘full [FAILED] functionality’
You’d have to pay me to use AT&T for “broadband” tethering. I won’t trust a provider who regularly drops calls before a first word is even spoken.
if you’ve already activated the tethering through hack how can they tell if you are using tethering or not?
The true is: There will always be ways to get around it, given the fact there are so many smart people owning iPhone! AT & T is no match in this regard.
I’d pay for $50 with Data Included. $30 for Data, $20 for Tethering.
AT&T are hustlers. They are double charging people. What is the definition of “unlimited data plan?” Cell phone carriers are continuing with their shady ways.
$30, $45, or $60 to add tethering to an “unlimited” data plan seems outrageous. But I guess if you can then drop a few $12 / day WiFI charges from your monthly bill it’s not too bad.
Mmmm
$30 base
then $25 will be the add on charge cause you know you might use that precious data they are already billing you fo.
$55
I’m sure they will spin it as a $5 discount since they wanted to charge you 59.99 but thought we might complain less this way.
I swear if the telcomes ran the world we would still be communicating with smoke signals at $10.99 a puff.
It shouldn’t cost a dime extra. It won’t cost them a dime (except to police and make sure people are paying them) and you’re already paying them for unlimited data.
The funny thing is that when you add tethering to a Blackberry (even on edge) you end up adding a cap of 5GB instead of it being unlimited. So you pay more and get a cap.
I think the tethering option will come in handy when traveling . . something you can turn on for a few weeks and then turn off. The mandatory $30 data plan is one of the reasons I still don’t have an iPhone! No other phone (subsidy or not) has a mandatory data plan.
I wouldn’t pay a dime. It’s hard enough to get a solid 3G signal where I live and tend to travel, which stresses me out as it is. If I paid to teether and found myself on Edge all the time, I might have a stroke.
Hello I’m very new at this whole iPhone thing and I love it this technoigy is awsome but if AT&T is going to charge 55$ for tethering then we or I am better off paying for mifi 15 or 20$ I’m on bord thanks
