I want live streaming video recording apps on the iPhone. You want live streaming video recording apps on the iPhone. Everyone wants live streaming video recording apps on the iPhone – except for Apple. Though such applications have been available through unofficial means for over a year now, Apple remains mum on the matter. There they sit in Apple’s review queue, rotting away beneath an “In Review” label.
Looking to find some way onto the platform, developers have begun to scale back their applications until they reach a point Apple is willing to greenlight. We saw it earlier this month with Ustream’s streamless app, and now Qik has followed suit. Beginning today, Qik’s own sans-streaming app is available for the iPhone 3GS.
Like the Ustream app, Qik’s new tool is primarily for pre-recorded video already camped out in your Camera Roll. You can also record video on the spot, but uploading does not begin until the recording is complete.
Though not a completely cutting-edge concept, Qik does claim a couple of firsts:
- Auto Uploading: If you record within the app, videos are uploaded immediately after shooting is complete.
- Record video in either portrait or landscape mode.
- Geotagged video uploads, based on your position at the time of upload
- Auto uploads to Facebook, Youtube, and various blog services.
It’s not the jailbreak-free streaming solution we’re dying for, but it’s the best we’ll get until Apple gets friendly with the concept.

who cares? always crashing on me….
Well, I’ve heard that another app is going to be up on the appstore tomorrow that allows geotagging videos and uploading to one’s youtube profile. Some stanford students’. bizz or buzz or something.
It’s wifi only. That’s a big fail. Atleast the others are 3G also.
Why not just send it to youtube?
Auto-integration to Facebook, Twitter (I believe), etc.
this is like a hamburger without the meat! and i aint vegan
Useful to upload when you couldn’t stream I guess. I’ll stick with the jailbroken version.
I know this isn’t any help for iPhone owners, but it’s available in all it’s glory for the Android now
You want live streaming video on the iPhone!?!? You can’t handle live streaming video on the iPhone!!!
Qik is still in business? Sexy idea, no future though.
Hey, grandma, look what I see.
Shameless self-promotion. Upload to Facebook with your 3GS http://bit.ly/VideoUp unless all your friends are on Qik for some reason. :)
I’m not trying to hate but this is silly. Are people really “dying” for a jailbreak-free solution? If you wanted it bad enough you would have jailbroken your phone long ago. Qik was the main reason I jailbroke my phone when I first bought it and remains the primary reason I keep it jailbroken.
Are people dying to see a bunch of amaetuers put up crap videos? “Oh no, I can’t wait 3 minutes to have it online”>
So silly. I hope at least Flixwagon makes it to the store with the feature, though AT&T bandwidth politics won’t make it likely.
What a fantastic system; sell unlimited bandwidth to users, make sure users don’t get any of it by blocking innovative apps that use bandwidth from the app store altogether.
I just love how AT&T’s dictates what goes and what doesn’t in the app store to ALL users of iPhone, including the millions all over the world who are not living in this country, not using AT&T and don’t care for. What gives?
The safest thing to do with Apple is not to buy from them and not to develop for them but if you do you shouldn’t complain as their attitude has been known since the ’80s. iPhone users get what they deserve for staying inside Apple’s wallet garden, some good things in exchange from some bad things. You can’t get the former if you don’t accept the latter. No streaming video is one of them. Apple will eventually give it to you guys, but there will always be something that Apple won’t give you.
I think it’s nice that iPhone users are getting the same apps S60 users have had for well over two years even if they are cut down pale imitiations.
No really.
ugh.. im not sure why everyone doesnt just jail break there phone..
One of the reasons I loved QIK for the live streaming was being able to have people “comment” on my video as I was recording.
I was showing off my new Apple Time Capsule a few months ago and needed a new place for my speaker… some random guy saw the video and typed “just put it on top of the printer”, to which I responded by putting the speaker on top of the printer. It was genius!
Just saying :)
Works fine in Android as well…
Once again… Android FTW!
Qik has never been live anyway, it usually lags behind for like minutes on my N95
