MetroPCS has been around since 1994. Windows Mobile has been around in one form or another since 2000. You think at some point their paths would have crossed, right? Nope – not until now, at least.

Live images of the Samsung SCH-i220 Code have just leaked out, and there it is, emblazoned across the top of the device: the MetroPCS logo. Running WinMo 6.1 on a QVGA display with EVDO, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and a QWERTY keyboard, it’s not exactly mind-blowing on the hardware specs front – but a smartphone is a smartphone.

Current rumors pin this launching sometime next month, though there’s no word yet on pricing.

  • Finally. Metro PCS does have a reasonable service, but they never had a good phone or even 3G data services. With this things will catch up and maybe they can get users from other providers that are not happy with the price tags for the data services and phones.

  • wow wasn’t aware Metro PCS has been around for so long. We just got a few stores in NYC, and saw it being promoted on the train the last year or so. But it’s goog they’re finally offering better phones.

  • Welcome to the new millennium Metro PCS customers.

Don’t worry that whole Y2K thing didn’t happen.

  • I envy my Metro PCS friends. I poke fun at the horrible phones and they are in fact horrible phones, and if you travel any distance, the coverage is useless. But you just can’t beat unlimited everything for $50.00 and no contracts. Honesty, if they had a nice phone, even if it cost me upwards of $400.00, I would consider moving over. My feeling is as they grow and gain more coverage, and thus more credibility, the phones will get very nice.

My general feeling is MetoPCS could actually force a no contract world in 5 years.

Watch out for the “poor man’s provider”

    • Well, I just checked the coverage, this has probably grown x 10 since I checked them out last year, so maybe this phone is the first step into main stream-ish hardware.

I will stick with my comment – Watch out for the “poor man’s provider”

    • Actually MetroPCS had RIM offer us BB service in Florida. I don’t think the BB is and AWS capable phone though, so you in the north east and vegas area wont be able to use it.

  • Nobody offers a really nation wide coverage. Now metro has grown a lot. I have been costumer for a while a have no complains.

  • That is great, I have been a costumer of Metro and the service has got way better and better phones.

  • Iam LOOKing for a nice phone if I find one I will change over

  • Poor man Ideal here I come metro
