A few hours ago, we got a tip from one of our readers that they’d popped into their iPhone messaging app this morning, only to find that they’d suddenly gained the ability to send MMS. We chalked it up as a fluke – AT&T promised it would launch on September 25th, after all, and they haven’t exactly been punctual about this whole thing thus far. Two whole weeks early? It seemed shaky.
Then a few hours later, we got another one. So far, we’ve received three tips, all from entirely different people, all claiming that MMS has sprung up on their iPhones sans jailbreak or any other sort of hackery. Being the curious folks we are, we popped over to Twitter, and sure enough: there’s a stream (albeit a very slow one) of folks reporting that MMS is now up and running on their handsets. Enabling MMS on AT&T’s end is a matter of disabling an “opt-out” toggle on each account, so this is the exact manner we’d expect things to roll out.
We’ve contacted AT&T for comment, and we’ll report back with whatever we hear. Any more of our readers finding themselves MMS’d this morning?
[Thanks David, Bethany, and Sean]

Just to weigh in on the matter: No MMS for me, yet.
An anticipated MMS news! But still it was great surprise from AT&T. There’s a stream of folks reporting that MMS is now up and running on their handsets too. AT&T finally kept its word. Now, we should wait to see if it works without any hiccups.
I too feel it appropriate to celebrate the arrival of a technology that has been around on every other phone since 2003.
You guys are spoilt.
Here is an entire thread of comments, granted most of them are “what are you settings”, there is actually a lot of cities having MMS. http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1569267
yeh. Works fine. Just need to know where and how.

Finally AT&T’s promise comes true beforehand. A surprise shock to iPhone users before expected. This feature was longed for these days. The faster the innovations and the performance improvisations, the quicker AT&T builds user’s trust in it.
It is here, for the technologically adept only:

Fuck the Iphone
Fuck the Ifan
cool bro :)
Working for me, in Cleveland. Did need to update the carrier file to 5.1 though.
I added the updated carrier file to both my father’s 3GS and my own 3GS, and updated the settings in Network. Oddly enough, my phone sends and recieved MMS just fine, but my father’s phone can’t do either. It fails to send anything, and any MMS sent to the phone never arrive.
Paul: it’s not really that odd. Read the article: AT&T is enabling it for select users only. You don’t have any say in the process.
The weird part is that my father is the account holder both iPhones are under, his phone being the “parent” account. It was exactly enabled by AT&T either in the way the article describes, I did a bit of the aforementioned “hackery” to get MMS to appear. Though, I do assume it’s on AT&Ts end as to who actually has the opt-out codes removed.
No MMS love for me :(
so.. what the hell is MMS exactly…? A proprietary e-mail network that allows the carriers to charge you for sending messages that you could just as easily send via e-mail?
To be fair – most internet packages include MMS. It just makes sending pics from one phone to another much easier.
Actually, yesterday I hacked a way to get it to work – http://rfly.me/mmsus
I truly feel sorry gor all ATT subscribers. MMS worked since I got my iPhone 3GS! I’m on Orange Switzerland and am happy to be so.
There is just NO reason not to have MMS on an iPhone in my opinion. The data traffic it uses is very small compared to surfing…
Although I only use MMS for the occasional picture taking (and sharing with some friends), I’m feeling good to be able to use it when necessary…
There’s NO excuse for not having MMS, AT&T, no matter what! I’m sorry, but taking so long to activate this functionality is aweful! Shame on you!!!
Just like ATT to do something idiotic like this. This is a GREAT way to piss off your customer base. Give a feature everyone has been waiting on to some while denying it to other and making them wait. ATT has their head up their ass and I hope once Apple allows another U.S. carrier to have the iPhone that they get buried like the trash telecom provider that they are.
Grow up. AT&T’s network blows green chunks, but this is the absolutely correct way to do this, knowing their problems with high-volume traffic. How much worse would it be if their entire network fell down around their ankles because they underestimated the usage this would have? (again, I know)
I got it working in Pittsburgh, PA with this link:

Thanks for the link Beth. These instructions were very easy and clear. Worked like a charm too!
That is GREAT news… At last…
Forgot to add the settings that I had to enable on the iphone after following the instructions I posted in my earlier post.

just tried it here in silicon valley. Works great!
Congratulations iPhone users! Welcome to 2002…
What’s your phone #??? I just took a picture of a movie poster for the upcoming Matrix sequel! 2003 is going to be AWESOME!!
I work for AT&T. Is this true? Not sure.
That said, if you have Family Messaging UNL on your account, it does not ax the MMS ability on our network for your iPhone and leaves it active. I wonder if all the people who have it working already have FAM MSG UNL?
so only enabling MMS for a few subscribers at a time? I’m envisioning that maybe AT&T has some guy whose job it is to remotely log into all of their servers and upgrade the software, and the guy can’t find the root passwords on all of them, and when he does finally get logged in, every server is set up differently and he has to troubleshoot a different error message with every upgrade that he runs. man.. I tell ya… this country’s telecommunications infrastructure is skating on thin ice…
…but I guess that’s what you get when the only thing driving the whole engine is the need for people to download beyonce ring tones and send drunken half-naked pictures to their 15 yr old significant other. For as bad as the American telecommunications infrastructure is, it’s amazing the infrastructure actually works as well as it does.
You know what I like… I like those robo calls I get that I can’t hang up on… Literally… there is some outfit that keeps robo calling me, and if I hang up, wait a good 10 seconds, and then pick the phone back up, the robo call is still there… I can’t get a dial tone… I can’t call 911 if I have to… I have to wait for the robocall to hang up… I ran into a similar glitch with a calling card back in the 90’s… I discovered by accident that I could force the calling card to route random calls to my house… but that’s another story…
anyway… I guess what do you expect when you’re only paying between one and two thousand dollars per year for your phone service… perfection? Obviously, when the phone service costs that much, that should be your first clue that there is something seriously wrong with this picture…
Absolutely true. Everybody needs to wake up to how much we’re getting raped by these telcos year after year. Collusion, market monopolies and price gouging are the norm.

I have the icon to send MMS but it isn’t working. Sigh. Betting I will have it the 25th. If then.
Try turning off wifi, that worked for me.
haha oh apple and there walls…MMS is like 1999..who the fuck needs a compass..apple does what they want when they want…thats why when i had a iphone i jailbroke it AND unclcked…olny to sell it a few months later…Iphones are kickass but not that kickass…

Oh noes! Soon they’ll even do something as revolutionary as let people decide which apps they want to install on their phone and which ones they don’t want *gasp*
Fucking pathetic.
Hey. Nutcase. Not sure what kinda Android koolaid you’ve been drinking, but last I checked, nobody’s forcing me to download (or not download) an app for my iPhone.
Just keep saving up your money from your job sacking groceries and you -too- can own the iPhone.
Hey Frank? You’re an idiot.
apple people are getting grumpier and grumpier these days…..lol!
Yah promise them a new gizmo with a camera in it and then you take the camera away at the last minute and suddenly they go full vagina on message boards and start talking about “android koolaid”.
I would like a glass of that however….will there be cookies too? I love those ones shaped like peanuts with the vanilla cream in the center. thnx….
My MMS came online right when I downloaded the 3.1 update. I noticed the little camera to see if it worked and sure enough people could receive my pictures and videos and I could receive theirs. I tried it to other providers and email accounts and it works for all. I was in Honolulu though so I thoughtnl it might be a fluke but upon returning to Riverside, CA it still worked. Works now even.
It seems to work just needed to restart iphone… but still will not send pictures.. i can attach them and everything but fails to send :( http://twitpic.com/ho085
Same with mine. A restart shows the camera icon but doesn’t work. Messages fail to send. No hacks, no jailbreak, just a restart and I can see the camera icon. Wish it worked though.
It works if you turn off WiFi.
Turn off wifi, it works that way…
At least this is not a twitter article.
I don’t have it yet, but I also noticed a update downloaded to my computer . . . maybe if I plug it in . . .

It’s not active in every area. Look here for info on what areas are getting MMS working – http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1569267

Finally!
No MMS For me either… and honestly..who cares. email works even better. I get annoyed whenever someone wants to send me an mms.
I’ve had MMS since forever because I am on T-Mobile.
Yea!! It works!! I live in Los Angeles area and as soon as I saw the Twitters, I tried it (download ipcc file and update carrier settings so I can even see the option – which is a little tricky but u can google it). And it worked right off the bat! I’ve tried receiving and sending to all carriers. I’ve been a AT&T member for 8 years with 2 lines… maybe that has something to do with it.
Why on earth would anyone bother with the limited capabilities of “MMS” on a device that can send/receive real email?
excited over MMS?..wow…. welcome to 2002 ATT iphone users…..
I guess you don’t understand that the vast majority of cell phone users don’t use email on their phones or have access to their email on the go. Therefore, they send MMS phone to phone while on the go.
It may seem like this is “old” tech but it’s still widely used. Also, if you don’t have an iphone and have to go to the damned website http://www.viewmymessage.com/2 everytime then you would understand. It only works half the time. Plus, in order for you to receive pictures via email you have to tell everyone that sends you MMS to send it to your email instead. Waste time….
Any other questions?
AT&T is probably going to make more money off every iPhone users going ZOMFG MMS NOW LETS SEE IF IT WORKS than off normal use.
Really, it’s marketing genius.
Half of them will think this is some new technology that Steve Jobs has graced them with.
I still can’t convince my cousin that Apple didn’t invent the portable MP3 player.
She even saw my old Rio 300 (long dead, btw) sitting in a drawer once and said in a snide tone: “pfftt…everyone just wants to copy the Ipod”.
Here in San Francisco and it doesn’t work for me. I even upgraded to the 5.1 carrier file.
I have an iPhone 3G jailbroken to firmware 3.1 and I am able to send/receive pictures with MMS. Also, I can send/receive videos (.3gp) with cycorder.
