It’s time to go back, folks. Waaay back. Back to a simpler time; back when the government was busy with Enron and leaving No Child Behind. Back when the best Nintendo handheld the world knew had one screen and looked vaguely like a clam, and smart phones cost upwards of $600 – on contract.
We’re talking, of course, about 2002. Why are we having this little time travel adventure, you ask? Because 2002 also happens to be the same year MMS, otherwise known as “Multimedia Messaging Service” or “How people send inappropriate pictures to each other when they’re drunk”, made its big debut. Today, just 819 days and 3 models after launch, this oh-so-futuristic feature has found its way to iPhones on AT&T’s network. We loves us some iPhone around these parts – but anybody who thinks its acceptable that it took AT&T this long to get a feature found on every dumbphone since 2003 onto their flagship handset is taking too many sips of the fanboy juice.
It’s not live quite yet – but expect it sometime around lunch time, wherever you are. Remember, you’ll most likely have to plug into iTunes for a carrier update.
Update: The update just went live.

Is there any feature you couldn’t say that for? It is the 21st century– I don’t necessarily think it’s mutually exclusive to have coverage or MMS, and I doubt the coverage improved through the lack of MMS. Makes no sense.
I can see the signs now, it’s like a value menu. Any 2 of 3 for $99 a month. Coverage | Web Access | Interoperability.
Then don’t go with AT&T. Clerk at the Apple Store the other day told me that they had taken down 60% of their towers in the weeks or in some cases, months preceding the MMS launch. All those dropped calls… yeah.

WTF? I’m sick of waiting. Quit yanking our chains AT&T!!!!!!!! It’s 10am PACIFIC time, lets have it already!
I continue to hate AT&T and view them as one of the worst mobile phone providers in America. I cannot wait until the day comes when I leave them.

AT&T AND Apple. Unless you think Apple was duped from the first moment of working with AT&T, they are just as responsible for the lack.
It was hilarious a few years back we were making and exchanging ringtones via MMS or URL, and there was only one guy that couldn’t participate. But he could buy them through iTunes. Fun stuff.
Also you guys missed out on 6 years of forwarded MMS jokes and animated GIFs, BTW. Tough :)
So is this really going to happen? Part of me feels like this is going to end up being a cruel joke from AT&T.
I can just see them in their board room right now…red faces, in tears, and clinging to their bellies as their abdomens contract in pain from laughing so hard at us poor, gullible iPhone users.

At&t sucks!!!!! Here it is September 25, 2009. The supposed date that MMS is available. But, guess what it still ISN”T……….

Just a FYI, if you upgrade to Apple’s official 3.1 firmware, you will not be able to jailbreak/unlock.

The official 3.1 upgrades your baseband also, which has NOT been hacked yet — and no guarantee that it ever will be.
just downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0
have done it on so many 2g,3g iphones and worked just fine
MMS will be nice. But I am awaiting that crazy feature that lets you change the alert tone when you receive an email, which all other phones have had for even longer than MMS. Annoying all iPhones have the same impossible-to-hear tone that cant be changed.

I got the update, it lasted for 2 seconds and now NOTHING! What’s going on?
I just got my update it was not working until I rebooted the phone and then wham it was all up and running

Will this new carrier file disable any tethering hack? The 3.1 OS did, and I downgraded back to 3.0.1 and was able to keep tethering. I will download the new carrier file to get MMS (as long as it does not disable tethering) while still holding off on the 3.1 update if possible. Does anyone know details about this?
My tethering never got taken away and other than this update I am current. The shame is that I have it and never even use it…

At 1:11 while logged into my att account I got a message saying it was enabled, downloaded it on itunes and works perfectly……so far.

got it. What about tethering? That was also part of the end of summer availability announcement by AT&T but now they seem to be ignoring it. I think that feature is more important to users than MMS as we have many other alts to send pics on the iphone
So, do i need to upgrade to 3.1 to get this carrier update? Or, will there be a prompt to upgrade to 3.1 (cancel that) and then there’ll be a prompt to update carrier profile?
ATT never said anything about dates for tethering.
In june I could have sworn saw on at&t faq that mms and tethering would be avail by end of summer. maybe it was my wishful thinking cause now they are separate (maybe it was poorly worded faq and they since fixed). I really wish they would offer this but unfortunately for consumers the lack of any competition from other carriers for the iPhone AT&T can pretty much get away with deprecating a feature.
Tethering is already available, you just need to download the config file from Australia… It works for me
