Welcome to the future, everyone! As we mentioned earlier this morning, AT&T is rolling out MMS for the iPhone today. If you’re one of those folks who couldn’t be bothered to sit in iTunes and click the “Update” button for hours on end, go check now. We just got hit by an onslaught of reports saying that it had gone live and, sure enough, we just got our update.
To get the update, plug into iTunes, go to your iPhones device screen, and hit the update button. The carrier file will take 5-10 seconds to download. Power cycle your handset, and bam – you’re ready to roll.
Update: CrunchGear Alum Peter Ha thought we ought to add a screenshot to this post. Not sure why anyone would want a picture of us sending a picture, but here you go, Peter! Have a picture of us sending a picture of you to you.

Haha welcome to the future. Thats pretty good.
Will this new carrier file disable any tethering hack? The 3.1 OS did, and I downgraded back to 3.0.1 and was able to keep tethering. I will download the new carrier file to get MMS (as long as it does not disable tethering) while still holding off on the 3.1 update if possible. Does anyone know details about this?
Yes… it killed my tethering hack. Erased it completely from the Network/Settings screen.
i still have my tethering and i just updated my phone
What did you do to keep it? Like the others here, I lost mine.
awesome!!!! I can now send ecards: “sorry I missed your call”
But it’s not working!!!! I’ve enabled it and every time I try to send a picture I get an error that the message was not sent. My guess it everyone and their mother has now enabled MMS. Hopefully, it will start working soon.
Did you turn off your iPhone and then turn it back on? Necessary step.
Is there anyway to do the carrier update without having to jump to 3.1? I am on 3.0 and dont want all the issues I am reading about!
Need 3.1 — I’ve had no problems with it.
Yay, MMS, I feel so empowered! Thanks AT&T…
Thanks AT&T???? ARE YOU SERIOUS??? THANK THEM FOR CHARGING PREMIUM RATES FOR TXT completely WITHOUT MMS??? F-YOU AT&T!!
Hey buddy. Guess what. That was sarcasm. It really isnt that serious, relax.
I don’t uderstand folks like you who bash companies. You have a choice, if you don’t like the company pick another one.
Uh you really don’t have a choice of which carrier you want if you want the iphone and all of its goodness. ATT was charging 20 bills a month for solely sms, along with premium rates for data and voice. I think ATT deserves to get their balls busted.
Get over it… the iphone had plenty of other features to distract from it’s blatant lack of MMS, and if you have people in your phone book that don’t know how to send picturemail to an email linked to your iphone (thus diminishing the problem significantly) then you should consider getting more tech savvy friends to satisfy your hunger for pix.
Dude it’s “its blatant lack”, nor “it’s blatant lack”. Learn how to spell.
I agree with you 100%. AT&T is the shittiest provider out there and if it weren’t for the iPhone I wouldn’t be held hostage to them. I hope T-Mobile picks up the device here in the States soon.
Next up: Tethering.
Too bad… I just ordered the N900 which will not have built in support for MMS. What is it with these phones/carriers?
Congratulations AT&T. Your “flagship phone” is now on par with cell phones released in 2004. (says the iPhone owner)
^
Can you still update if your on 3.0.1? Or you have to be on 3.1? Cuz on my iTunes instead of check for updates it says Update, which will update to 3.1 not the carrier’s file.
How do are you supposed to use it? I
I downloaded the update but I still can’t send pics! It shows I have 3.1 but when I go to text the lil camera symbol won’t even show next to my text!
Restart your phone.
Yes… it kills the tethering hack.
Yes, folks. You do NOT have to be on 3.1. MMS has been incorporated into the OS since 3.0 so as long as you have 3.0, 3.0.1 or 3.1 on your 3G or 3G S you can send MMS once you upgrade the carrier file. The original iPhone does not support MMS, however…
How do you upgrade the carrier file. I went into ITunes and it says I am updated….I have restarted my phone 3 times already!
You said: …so as long as you have 3.0, 3.0.1 or 3.1 on your 3G or 3G S you can send MMS…
I have an Original iPhone, went through the upgrade to 3.0.1 and reset my phone but can’t do MMS.
Is MMS only for 3G or 3G S?
i had the same issue…once you complete the 3.1 update, connect again to your computer/itunes, and it will give you the option for the carrier update..download that, restart, and have a ball.
Sweet! Now I can send pics with my iPhone like I was able to with my KRZR!
Damn I have the first generation iPhone…am I outta luck?!
Sweet, now I can send drunken porno pics to my lady friends… oh yeah.
Yay! I like how I was able to mms on my pos phones back in 2000! It only too AT&T 9 years. Bravo! Golf clap.
STHOOOOOPER now I can send pics to my gay lover
MMMM
this is SUPER news
for my bf
What is this you all speak of?
On 3G and 3GS get the MMS update. BOO
don’t upgrade from 3.0 to 3.1 via apple if you want an unlockable iphone. afterall, isn’t having an unlockabile iphone for high resale value, use on Tmobile, or with cel networks around the world far more important than sending pic messages via at&t?
Crap! It keeps giving me an error.. like millions of iPhone users are trying to get the update. I iTunes won’t download it!!! DO IT!!!!!!!!
If you dont want to update to 3.1 but still want mms then check this out.

Oh BTW it works on Jailbroken 3g, and i still my phone jailbreaked after this tutorial
Is it just me, or is this exactly the same as emailing a pic? Can’t figure it out, other than it probably doesn’t get charged under my data plan.
It’s about Good & Damn Time!
Ok WTF, I have version 3.1, I have restarted my phone 3 times and still no ability to send or receive MMS. I don’t even get notafication of a MMS message received anymore. WTF am I missing?
okay people – if you opened itunes and checked for update, and it gave you 3.1 – you need to do this one more time for the carrier settings update.
then, you’re going to have to restart your phone for it to take effect.
come on people, get with it here!
Well that was scary. When I rebooted at first I got the “sad iPhone” JB mode. Did another quick reboot and now everything in the world is right again.
To all that worry about 3.1 software.. I have two phones running 3.o Jailbroken. I have installed the carrier update and its working properly. I had the feature two days early on both phones.. Although it seems a little slow at times.. I’m sure that AT&T will get with teh program and make needed adjustments on teh network to allow the mass sending and receiving that is being attempted.
I’m pretty excited about the update. i knew when I bought my iPhone in February that it didn’t come with MMS and that I would just deal with it. That was my choice. However, it sure was worth the wait!
nice update
For everyone wondering about tethering with the http://help.benm.at/help.php hack: if you are running OS 3.0.1 go to http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=792908 and follow the instructions.
If you are running OS 3.0.1 you can do the carrier update to AT&T 5.5, then MMS and tethering will both work! If you update to OS 3.1 tethering will not work. If you go to http://help.benm.at/help.php it has a video on how to downgrade.
Also be careful the ipcc file will try to save as a zip file. Don’t let it.
The big news is a sad news. MMS in the US after everybody else in the world, europe-wise at least. Poor american dudes, so many paradoxes!
Nice update .please update more .
NEWSFLASH: Apple iPhone gets MMS! Welcome to the 90s! Now if it could just make and keep an actual phone call in San Francisco, I might consider buying one.
Yes the MMS is only for 3G and 3G/s running 3.0 or better firmware. OG iPhone will not work with MMS
When will AT&T roll out an update that actually allows us to make a phone call without dropping the call several times?
Some day, we can delete one single call record on iPhone without having to delete the whole call log.
Do not abuse your children!!! They will turn out to be Apple fanbois!!!
My MMS will not go through. Send fails every time. THANKS AT&T
Failing on network level….
How many months does AT&T need to deliver a service everyone else has had for years?
I don’t understand why iPhone MMS is so different.
AT&T’s network must be so crowded from the data plans that it can’t handle it.
It’s really a good news.
I installed the update but I didn’t realize you had to power off and restart the phone afterward. Apps don’t require a restart and this was the first system update I’ve done since getting the phone.
I just power cycled the phone and now have the mms; I just sent and received a photo message and it worked perfect.
I have a 3G with 3.1 . I have clicked on updates and it says I am up to date. I have powered down my phone and plugged it back in. How can I get the MMS features. Also, Does anyone have the tether ability in 3.1
