Ah – there we are. Just as the long rumored Motorola Sholes started to slip off the radar after failing to make an appearance at Motorola’s big (read: somewhat underwhelming) Android announcement earlier this month, it has moseyed its way right through the FCC.

Now that the FCC has verified that the Sholes wont melt your brain or ruin all nearby radio equipment, when can we expect it to launch? Well, these things aren’t exactly definite by any means – we’ve seen plenty of devices clear the FCC only to launch as much as 6 months later – but we’d imagine the Verizon is anxious to get their first Android device out the door. With the Sprint Hero and Motorola’s other Android device, the Cliq, going on sale on T-Mobile come October, it wouldn’t be a bad time for Verizon to hop in and throw down.

  • ohhhhh mmyyyy ggooossshhh!!!!~! this is soooo sexiiiiii

  • Any word on a UK release? Price? Anything?

  • So now will AT&T get around to an Android device.

  • i’m actually surprised it *just* got clearance from the FCC. i would’ve thought this would’ve happened a lot sooner.

  • Hmm. Its looks nice. I m finding it? can you people help me to find it?

  • Wow! I’m surprised at the reactions. I think it looks incredibly ugly!

Not to mention, no dedicated keys for @ and / which makes entering email addresses and web pages unnecessarily awkward. Add to that, no Shift and Alt keys on each side. Which makes mixed case and numeric typing awkward.

And the lack of a D-Pad or a trackball outside the keyboard means that you can’t use it vertically and have to flip out the keyboard every time it has to be used.

Not impressed hardware wise with this or the Cliq.

    • What the hell do you need an ALT key for? Are you trying to CTRL-ALT-DEL the phone? This isn’t windows, it’s Android dumbass.

There is a shift button under the Q if you hadn’t noticed and both the @ and / symbols are on there. Given there usage rate, a dedicated key would be overkill. I’d rather have bigger keys and have to press shift for my special characters.

Since it is a touch phone, what the hell do you need a track or D-pad outside the keyboard?

Do you have any idea what you are talking about?

      • It does actually have an ALT key too :P Bottom right corner, so Milind you didn’t look too closely :P

And also for symbols, it works just like a regular keyboard – you use shift for the @ symbol anyway…

      • obstruksion is right. IT is a TOUCH SCREEN, millind. You touch the screen and the phone does what you tell it to by were you touch. Hey millind, How about reading the article before commenting, retard.

      • I can’t voice *my* opinion without being called a dumbass? Seriously, can’t we have a civil discussion?

Why do I need an Alt key? Too press the characters in Blue. I have the G1. And I love the fact that it’s got two Alt keys. So I can press the Alt key on he other side of the blue character I want to use. In this case, hitting Left-Alt+0 is easier than Right-Alt+0. Same with the Shift keys. If you have a G1, are you using the Alt/Shift key on the same side always? If so, more power to you. I find it very *significantly* easier to use both keys.

The G1 is also a touch screen, but I use the track ball a lot. Especially while browsing. I don’t play games, but my son does and I see him using it a lot as well.

So I presume all of you who have the G1, never use the track ball? Have you never used it to position the cursor in the right position in text fields?

    • That boxy shape reminds me of the Zune ;) And we all know what happened to Zune..The graveyard for tech items should be named Zuneyard ;)

    • iphone has no dpad or trackball. This is a touch device…perhaps you can use the touchscreen when its vertical.

  • This looks really great.
I am going to pick one up when it comes out.
I use the Blackberry curve now and love it as the QWERTY keyboard is a must for me. This one looks like the best of both worlds, iPhone and Curve!

  • What I want to know is, Did they remember a jack for my head phones?

There is not one on the G1 or the Touch. And that’s why there’s not a t-mobile in my pocket right now.

Also. Is Verizon going to try to castrate this phone like they do all their other phones?

  • The physical keyboard is so archaic…just more moving parts to break and wear out. There has been no mention of battery life or storage has there? How about the interface? iPhone killer? I’ll believe it when I see it. Wasn’t the Pre suppose to be an iPhone killer?

    • Don’t compare an apple to an orange. Physical keyboards are faster than touchscreens, touchscreens do not leverage your sense of touch and yes in fact your brain does speed up typing when you have physical feedback. Touchscreens are not better than keyboards, they are an alternative.

  • The ALT key shown cannot be used by a left handed person.

  • Wow, the closest iPhone rip-off to date. So only two of the “iDon’ts” from the commercial are true, in comparison to a jailbroken iPhone of course, unless you consider a touchscreen keyboard “FAKE” ?

  • if you want a headphone jack, go on ebay and buy a mini usb to headphone adapter for 3 dollars. works great, thats what i use. mini usb is better than any port the iphone has. i can hook my G1 up to a ps3 and swap files back and forth…use ANY charger in creation that has a mini usb plug. iphones are shackled by not being an open platform. trust me, this phone will be great (except for the fact that I personally don’t like motorola products..but that’s just me)

  • Also, before you call it a “rip-off”, make sure you’ve extensively used a G1 and an iphone. my G1 just recently out perfromed my friends iphone when using the internet for looking up movie times. same website and all. so don’t jump to conclusions

  • nope, G1 on T-mobile and iphone on AT&T
