Embattled ratings company Nielsen has published some Internet findings that may interest you. (If not, go make a sandwich or something.) The big finding is that mobile access to the Internet has jumped 34 percent compared to last year, and it looks like women, teens and, yes, seniors make up the bulk of that increase. The mobile Internet: not just a place for 20-something men anymore. Darn.
So what are people looking at while on the mobile Internet? Women are all about People.com and other celebrity nonsense. For shame, women, reading that trash.
Men, meanwhile, are all about, yes, GIZMODO! They also like Maxim (of course) and sports. I’m very happy to see Drudge in the top 10—I probably represent a full 10 percent of Drudge’s mobile visits!
All in all, nothing too crazy here. I don’t see Twitter anywhere in the top 10s, but that’s probably because Twitter didn’t really blow up till this past spring. Before that it was just the TechCrunch crowd on there, if you know what I mean.

Thanks to iPhone & its browser.
And the company behind the delivery of most of the contents…Motricity
Who’s Motricity?
Yeah, because of iPhone lots of smart phones are coming and try to compete with iPhone. It is really nice platform. And becuase of that people are using phone as a Netbook or Laptop.
Mobile Safari is very nice browser.I’m using it.

SWINE FLU IS FOR LOVERS
Um… this isn’t Twitter!
Yes it is. Where have you been? Techcrunch comments are the new twitter!
@chubbs – I’m taking a poop.
Is this study for US only? Mobile Internet is already very big in India, given the low penetration of PC’s and ubiquitous GPRS/EDGE access.
True, and when 3G/4G service will launch in India-China ,it will grow even faster.
Drudge Report? are you retarded?
That explains a lot.
So how long before this is reflected in app usage, with celeb sites so popular with women I would expect the celeb *apps* to be getting more downloads than they currently do.. is app installation really still an early adopter thing?
why the hell do ppl care about twitter, that site will be below the ground by Q1 of next year, we already have enough status updates on facebook and myspace.
Yeah, the iPhone & it’s amazing browser, but I speculate http://www.iFastNews.com has a lot to do with it. I have not found a faster, easier way to quickly flick down through as much news & info from as many sites as quickly on my iPhone as by saving that site as an icon on my home screen.
The picture included with this post is not accurate, those tubes are parallel. The actual tubes which make up the Internet are in series, thus ‘a series of tubes’. Get your tech facts straight!
For Europe and North America this is great news. I think India and other countries in Asian and also Africa are where we will see significant growth as well. The mobile is often the most practical/only tool to access the internet.
Fantastic news that women and seniors are coming online with their mobile. Amazing since there is still so much to do to build and offer stuff for other than the TechCrunch crowd and nerds alike. Looking good for the coming years!
