Looks like Verizon might not be the only one getting the Moto Droid. A few days ago, we wrote a post highlighting the fact that a GSM version of the oh-so-hypetastic Motorola Droid (otherwise known as “Sholes” or “Tao”) had cleared the FCC runway. At first, we got a bit excited and misread the details, reading them as if that GSM version of the Sholes had AT&T-friendly 3G bands built in. It didn’t (it was the European GSM version) – but this one does!
Like the last time around, there is just one single reference to the device’s identity as the Sholes, tucked deep within the documents. Unlike that last one, however, this one features good ol’ WCDMA 850/1900/2100 — the bands AT&T uses for their UMTS 3G — alongside GSM 850/900/1800/1900, making it the perfect adoption candidate for both AT&T and Rogers.

[You rock, Rob]

Hell. Yes.
Oh yes, this just made my day.
what about t-mobile?
and Bell and Telus, although they can already run the CDMA version, it’s nice to know there’s an HSPA option.
Okay, honestly.
Android kinda sucks. Beyond push Gmail, what’s good about it? Notifications up on top? Seriously, that’s it?
iPhone and Pre both have WAY better Web browsers, Pre is much nicer to look at and cards are nicer to use, and iPhone has a killer iPod and all of those apps, for better or worse.
So, seriously, unless you’re a developer, why are you all hardened for Android?
I’ve used it, and I really don’t get it.
I have an iPhone, and the browser was made by blind mistreated developers on crack. Even opera mini on my backup sony ericsson is better. Iphone doesn’t even cache your pages! You have to wait if you click a back button. Ugh. I’m still not leaving my Iphone, but gotta say your ALL CAPS love for the browser is misguided at best.
“Android kinda sucks. Beyond push Gmail, what’s good about it? Notifications up on top? Seriously, that’s it?”
It doesn’t have “push Gmail,” that’s iPhone’s workaround for no multitasking.
Go play with one, as you clearly haven’t.
I played with the iPhone browser and Android browser and found NO difference between them.
Period. I also hate dealing with iTunes so Pandora and Android are my friends. Mp3s are so 90’s.
Cloud Computing
It looks as though the phone can potentially be unlocked to be served on T-Mobile based on the specifications of the hardware supporting the T-Mobile 1900 3G band.
I thought T-Mo used the 1700 band for 3G?
T-Mobile is 2G on 1900, they have 3G on 1700…
Still Verizon Droid on Verizon network will work better than on at&t
Actually, I think these phones may just be heading south of the border. In Latin America they use the same bands as AT&T if I remember correctly. So these may be heading there way while Verizon locks down an exclusive deal with the Droid here in the US.
That makes not sense They don’t need FCC approval to go South.
This might end up being some decent competition for the iphone yes? I mean, how tough can it be to beat them?
Good news. I hope to see a lot more (android) phones doing this, or even better, this: http://www.ecranmobile.fr/Motorola-Zeppelin-Android-Phone-Shows-Its-Back_a8627.html
I just hope it doesn’t take ages to get to Mexico
There is no pinching on the Droid.
and how much is this gonna cost on att cuz money dont grow on trees….but for this fone i might make an exception….lolz
If with AT&T then where’s the announcement already?
