Not amazing news but interesting nonetheless: Billshrink, a site dedicated to “saving you money” compared the total cost of ownership in the 3GS, the Pre, the MyTouch 3G, and the Droid. They found that TCO for an unlimited rate plan costs $3,799, the same as the iPhone 3GS. Both the Pre and the MyTouch are over $1,200 cheaper.
You’re obviously paying for hype and, it can be said, features here so you’ll want to factor that in as well. I’m bullish on the Droid so feel free to drop four grand if you must when it launches. I’m sticking with the other money sinkhole, the 3GS.

Its real simple. You only need one app “FLASH”. now you don’t need apps, and you get the whole internet not just half. GPS app is $99 on iPhone free in all android phones. iPhone will never get flash because they want you to spend more money on apps. With all the Google apps, gmail, docs, wave, voice, maps, etc this is truly the way to go. But if your just trying to fit in and be cool the follow all the other losers and stay with the iPhone.
Droid may be as expensive as the iPhone 3GS, but you can run different apps on the Droid at the same time, as opposed to the iPhone where you can only run one app at a time. The Droid has a 5 megapixel camera, as opposed to the iPhone’s 3 megapixel. And you can get apps for the Droid from different places, as opposed to the iPhone where you can only get apps from the Apple app store. If you’re making the jump from just a phone, to a smartphone, go with the Droid, or look at other smartphone out there. Don’t get the i-am-an-overhyped-Phone.
No one ever argued that the Droid would be cheaper. I’ve read probably 100 articles on the Droid and not one of them ever said “Plus it’ll be cheaper than the iPhone!”
I don’t care if it’s more expensive or cheaper – the fact that it’s a much better product than the iPhone is what I care about. And since I’m the one buying it, my opinion is what matters to me. Keep your iPhone – what do I care. You’ll be missing out on some awesome stuff though.
Shouldn’t it be the other way around, the iphone will be as expensive as the Droid, even though the Droid completely beats or matches in every category (bigger screen, higher resolution, better camera, physical keyboard, 16 gb sd cardd with the option to get bigger storage, and verizon’s better 3G network)
The only thing debatable is whether you like Android or Mobile Mac OS more… but the Droid is an even better value than the iPhone.
The review doesn’t account for the cost of the free turn by turn GPS.. (approx $100) and delegates it to fine print !
It certainly doesn’t show the TCO of the iphone compared to other phones. The iphone comes bare. It’s pretty useless out of the box. You need to spend a couple of hundred in apps to bring it up to the same level of functionality that other smartphones have.
Add that to the comparison.
Should be noted that Verizon is $20 more expensive then AT&T on every plan. I wantd to leave att because they are unreliable and I was paying over $120 a month.
Verizon isn’t so much better that I am willing to pay more. So I am sticking with the iPhone and AT&T.
that’s useless comparison … where’s htc hero?
What that price comparison doesn’t consider is that the Verizon data network is vastly better than AT&T’s.
I agree with ewpl… bring on the Hero (which sprint has) – HTC generally seems to make much better phones.
