Update: Sounds like Verizon probably sold about 100,000 Droids over the weekend.
Good news for Motorola and Verizon, it looks like the Droid is a hit. The new phone is certainly living up to the hype, and seems to be the breakaway hit of this holiday season.
Reports from retailers so far have been positive, with the initial stock of 200,000 phones selling rather quickly, however not selling out. There haven’t been any verified reports of people being unable the find the new phone, however there has been some rumors of people not being able to find the charging stand. This is exactly what Motorola needs right now, given their lack of success in the handset market since the introduction of the RZR.
Oh, and if you just picked up one of those shiny new Droid phones, you should totally check out our article on the top 10 apps a new Android phone owner should have.

Note to T-Mobile:
Can you guys get in on the Android 2.0 action? I really would like to upgrade my G1….
Thanks for your comment and I just wanted you to know that I’m having a hard time compiling the kernel but once I get it straightened out, an official release will follow.
Sincerely,
T-Mobile
OMG!!!!!! Catherine I love all your movies and commercials!!!!!!!! marry me!?
I think she married an old, old, wooden ship already. Sorry broham.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha….
Ok seriously.
Am I the only guy who was underwhelmed by the Droid? I think the keyboard is downright awful. My thumbs cannot feel the individual keys. I have to look at the board to type! I have not done that since the 3rd grade. :/
The d pad does not work for crap either. Should I take this thing back and demand another? Or is everyone else having a similar experience?
When I use the touch screen really fast the screen becomes pixilated. Anyone else have that?
Ditto for Sprint. Enough of the donut and cupcake…we want the Eclair.
Got my droid yesterday and I am in love with it. I’m not one to get a gadget just so everyone else can be envious, but its a nice added bonus. I have a 16gb ipod Touch 2nd gen and I am sad to say I will not be using it much anymore.
I have no complaints thus far with my Droid and can’t wait to download all of those recommended apps.
I would suggest the droid to anyone who wants a phone equal in power to the iphone, but who doesn’t want the AT&T network.
One caveat is that it seems to assume you know your way around slightly more than the iphone does. I can imagine less tech savy users to be confused for quiet a few days.
How’s the camera focus?
a Little wonky, but it works well enough. It doesn’t bother me, but some pictures do need to be taken more than once before a clear one is captured.
Regarding the camera focus…
Same here, it might take a few seconds, but the end result is quite acceptable for a mobile. (Note: it’s not like I bought the DROID to replace my DSLR anyway).
Conversely, I’m extremely pleased with the video quality, and it appears that there are quite a few new apps on the horizon that will make matters even better.
This IS the smartphone I’ve been waiting for – No Doubt!
Any news on a UK release?
Droid is the best! I am really loving the interface. The phone is much better than I thought it would be actually. I used to have an iPod Touch and like the interface better. Check out my comment of my favorite apps on the Mobile Crunch top 10 apps article.
As for the home dock, I was just at the local Verizon store and had to order it from the warehouse. They said I got one of the last few in the warehouse, and that they sold out of their stock within the first few minutes of launch.
FWIW, they were sold out in the small town where I live by lunch time. They had new shipments coming in that afternoon and the next day, however…
will get it when it can be jailbroken
Why on earth would you want to jailbrake an Android phone on Verizon?
U must be new to teh interwebs?
Having had Verizon for 3 years now I can tell you that Verizon loves nothing more than cutting the balls off of your phone in hopes of getting you to pay more for their services. I was so angry to find out that my GPS capable phone had been disabled and tried to sell me their version of directional map software… *sigh*
That said I thought the Droid had already been rooted?
Hmm?
CS, You might want to take a few moments to Google the term OPEN SOURCE.
The DROID is (by far) the best smartphone I’ve yet had the pleasure of owning.
I don’t miss my 3GS one iota, and apparently the spouse agrees since we’ll be trading in the last remaing iPhone we have for another DROID this afternoon.

This made me laugh! I love my DROID (so far).
Microsoft Exchange.
Well I now have read alomost 200 reviews on the topic and now I gotta toss in my 2 cents:
First off I want to say I am in NO WAY an apple fanboy. I like my iPhone very much but I am a die hard Google user as well. I have been in the cellphone industry for along time and I have a few programs out there for iPhone and Android. I use my Iphone 3Gs as my primary phone and My HERO (not Sprint) as my work phone. I did have the pleasure to use the Moto Droid now for a few days and I have to say…… Droid 2.0 is simply awesome, however the Moto phone on its own is VERY shabby….for me. The phone feels about as good as you would expect from Moto (yes the have had some great phones) but not as sleek as and HTC or Apple device. The Keypad is a nice touch but VERY hard to type on with average size fingers. The touch screen response is still lagging as with all the touch screen phones I have used outside of the iPhone, but thats not to say that that would kill the likeness. Now the coverage which in its self a whole other topic, my coverage for AT&T and Sprint are the same where I live and as luck would have it..so is big red. T-Mo is the only service I have used where I live that is shady. As for the new Verizon ads…Read this:
http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/2009/11/10/the-truth-about-att-vs-verizon/
Now im not saying this changes things, but it will give you a better understanding to what really goes on over the airwaves. (Sorry..fanboy site enclosed) Anyway, I have to say this; Is the droid better that the iPhone? I dont think so….Not yet..I have since played with the Eris and I gotta say that at that price point…It is a better phone. Keep this in mind, my iPhone is Jailbroken so ido run multitasking, idid have my battery replaced for Free from the apple store and my 3Gs camera is way better (you droid owners know what I’m talking about) and I have gotten to be a pro on the iPhone keyboard in a few weeks so that no longer bugs me. The problem I have is that using the multitasking on both device’s drains the hell out of your battery! And the Google OS is just as good as the iPhone OS in all respects, including batter life with all things considered. The apps are also another debate, for now iTunes is the best…hands down. But that WILL change in the next year or two. I think the simple truth in this massive debate is this: What do you want and why do you want it? Are you a super dork like me and love the tech? Or are you a minimalist and like to keep it simple? My conclusion is this… Let Android itself mature in the next 6 to 7 months and put a GREAT manufacture to the OS and you will have your real iPhone competition! The ERIS is close but needs some help, MOTO is not the device (Not the OS mind you) to bring down the likes of the iPhone. I do agree that the iPhone’s days are numbered, and there are a lot of good competitors out there. But what any carrier needs is a bad ass phone for a kick ass OS. Pick your team and then wait for the right phone for YOU.
Akio.
Sorry about all the mis spelling! Its late and iM tired.
AKIO
Glad to hear I am not the only one who thinks the keyboard is trash.
