Following KDDI’s announcement three weeks ago, Japan’s biggest cell phone carrier NTT Docomo today unveiled [JP] its winter-line up of cell phones (SoftBank, the No.3, did the same). And here are all the new models announced by Docomo for the Japanese market today.

  • Does anyone else find a QWERTY phone for a Japanese carrier a little odd? I’m completely ignorant of written vs. spoken Japanese and its subleties, but would they be texting in japanese with arabic characters or in English with that phone, and wouldn’t it be a little limiting?

  • It’s funny how the market for cell phones in the US and Europe now seem to lead even Japan. Seriously, these look like 5 year old feature-phone junk that happen to have high MP cameras with (no doubt) the same tiny/awful photo sensor. And WinMo 6.5? Ha!

    • Japanese phones have capabilities we can only dream of.

      1. I believe they’re already on 4G on some networks, from what I’ve read before.

      2. They often have TV tuners and people can watch TV all day on their phone if they choose to.

      3. You can use them as a subway pass from what I’ve read.

There’s probably more I didn’t even think of at almost 1am here, but their phones are in no way behind.

  • i live in japan now, and will continue to do so simply because of their phones and cars :)

  • Any idea whats up with the blue ray connectivity? To do what exactly?

  • @Ryan Trevisol: The use an input method where they enter characters/words phonetically using the qwerty keyboard and the system transcribe it to the correct kanji.

  • clamshells and more clamshells? O.o
    no thanks

  • japanese phone are nowhere near to iphone and it applications….here its more like three commnunication mafia companies dicatating what u can and cannot have…

  • Wonderful! Japan has so many choices for consumers compared to the US market! I’d love to live there!

  • steve you have no idea about these phones do you? these clamshell designs are damn popular over in japan. I was there last year – so the design hasn’t really different much.

Japanese network is so much further ahead than europeand and the us networks and their mobile tv is so much better there too. seen a bravia phone? no didn’t think so.

we may not like them but its the style that is being dictated over there. If anything european phones are a lot more better than the crap and old crap the us is still on. Look at the iphone and how limited that use to be.
