The Palm Pixi really wants to be a Pre

Don’t worry. This won’t be another post on the merits/shortcomings of the Pixi and whether such a handset is worthwhile as its older, more capable brother, the Pre, plummets in price. Other sites have done that to death.

I just wanted to point out that, regardless of how anyone feels about the handset, even the Pixi wants to be a Pre. Check out this picture, taken right from a fresh-out-of-the-box Pixi.

If I had to guess, I’d say one of the coders switched the firmware to read “Pre” during testing to ensure that no one at Palm accidentally confirmed the Pixi’s existence before it was intended, and then forgot to change it back. Or, you know, it never read “Pixi” and they just forgot to change it in the first place.

  • Would it be safe to say that the Palm Pre is “the next best thing” to the iPhone/Droid? or is it just the next best thing in the same sense that every other phone is the next best thing? I guess what I’m trying to ask is, is it anything worth getting excited over or is it just basically like every other phone of its type?

Sorry, couldn’t figure out how to properly word that question. :/

  • Kinda like how Apple sometimes forgets to change some instances of “iPhone” to “iPod Touch” when they make the iPod touch version of the firmware.

  • I have a Pre and I actually love it. It doesn’t seem to get any press, but I blame that on Palm’s awful commercial. Universal Search – to me – is the killer app. It’s the thing I couldn’t do without any more that will keep me on WebOS for a very long time. If you get a chance to pick one up, just type in “autozone” or “walmart” or “starbucks” – right from the start screen – and then click on google maps. It immediately knows where you are and finds the locations of your search in your area.

I know what you’re thinking… there’s an app for that, right? But this IS the Pre. This IS WebOS. There is nothing to launch. Slide it open, type, click, done. No lag, no wait. I also love the universal search when I’m calling or texting someone. “E.S.” are my friend’s initials. I type them in, his name pops up, I click on it and then click on the method I want to contact him: all of his phone numbers are there with links to call or text him, and all his e-mail addresses are there as well.

I realize there are apps for a lot of niche things you would want to do with your phone, but things like I describe above are 95% of what you do with your phone, and there is no better product in the market today for doing those things.

Palm, you suck at making commercials. Get better.

  • LOL, you said LOL.
