Samsung Trance Intensity

If you’re one of the 600,000 people who bought a Samsung Intensity (SCH U-490) or Samsung Trance (SCH U-450): good news! You’ve got an over-the-air update coming your way. One of our sources just came through with the patch notes for both handset’s respective updates, which are scheduled to begin as early as tomorrow.

There’s nothing too major on the update list here, so don’t expect to wake up to find your phone magically jam-packed with new features. With that said, a few of the soon-to-be-fixed bugs sound pretty annoying – so at worst, consider it a bit of polish.

Find the change lists after the jump:

Samsung SCH u-450

1. Audio gain level tweaked for better performance
2. Scrolling in the web browser no longer generates beeps if the device is in silent or vibrate mobe
3. Mobile IM navigation tweaked so that d-pad input now works as expected in landscape mode
4. Alarm clock notification no longer suspends MMS uploads
5. No more device interrupts when device is in emergency mode
6. Applications opened via smart links will now close properly when asked to from the UI
7. Keypad backlight now lights up when coming out of power save mode, which helps the user be able to unlock the device
8. Spelling errors in UI fixed
9. Urgent voicemails now get a blinking icon
10. Windows Live icon updated
11. A bug seen in landscape mode when replying to a call with a text where the letter E was not working has been fixed

Samsung SCH u-490

1. MMS now properly supports Reply with Copy
2. Several UI software enhancements were made to the way the device handles interruptions when running applications
3. SVG images now supported
4. Bug with how SMSs are handled when out of service area fixed
5. Bug with improper handling of “-“ character in SMS has been fixed

[Thanks, Tipster!]

  • FYI the Trance is the u490 and the Intensity is the u450. You have it the other way around in your article.

  • i just got this update…

    it made my phone worse..

I can’t even go into my messages without my phone turning off.

EVERY time i try to look at them it turns off.

It will let me send message from my contacts but not look at the inbox or outbox.

    Its lAME

  • I had the same thing happen instantly after the update, now I can’t open text messages. I called Verizon only to find out they don’t know how to fix it and I have to go to their store to get it looked at . . . . The phone was working just fine before the stupid update.

  • That was really messed up,

they are saying they dont even know how to fix it?

    they are so stupid.

    • Same here!!!!!!!!! Im going to the store today and find out whats up. If any of you guys get to fix this, please update us!!!!!!!!!

      Its super frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >=[

  • I can look at the outbox of my Trance, but every time I go to the inbox or try to view a new message, the phone restarts. Thanks, Verizon/Samsung.

  • Im glad im not the only one that has a broken phone.

  • UPDATE:
So I went to the Verizon Store to have them check out what was wrong. I explained to the rep that after successfully processing this morning’s Software Update that my Text Message Inbox was inaccessible and would reset the phone (everything else was fine). He suggested two options: (1) wipe out the phone and restore and/or (2) upload a Software Version prior to the recent update.

    WARNING:
Do NOT have them wipe out the phone and restore. You will walk out of the store with a loaner phone and having to wait for replacement phone to be shipped in! *eye roll*

    What happened:
So the rep said he’ll try to restore the phone first. So he wiped out everything and attempted to restore. Apparently with the new software update, it didnt like the restore and my phone is stuck in a “constant bootup” mode. Basically it remains in the Verizon Loadup screen and will not go beyond that to allow for restoration.

    Word of advice:
If you happen to bring the phone to a Verizon store, just have them go straight to uploading a previous software version. Whoever does this, please let me know if this works for you by responding here.

    All in all,
Verizon sent out a Software Update that lead to inaccessible Inbox, which then lead to a unusable/unrestorable phone, which lead to having to wait for a replacement. In my prior experience, replacement phones are CRAP!! So hope i dont go into any more trouble with what Verizon started.

    Good luck folks…

  • Another Trance owner - December 3rd, 2009 at 4:44 pm UTC

I had to call Verizon and factory reset mine. Luckily I use the Backup assistant. Lost all my ringers. Now I have to redo all my custom settings.

  • I had the same problem opening my inbox and viewing text messages after the update. I found that selecting options under messaging and then erase inbox, erase all read texts solved the problem.

  • I just spoke to a Verizon Tech on 12/3 at 8:30 pm, because my son’s Trance had this update pushed and is in the same boat as everyone else here.

He told me that this is a known issue, is a top priority problem and that Samsung has been alerted to it but he had no ETA to offer as when it will be fixed.

Until then we swapped back to my son’s old device, and the tech guy will be texting me on a daily basis to let me know if there has (or has not) been a fix pushed, He said it could be as little as 24 hours or even weeks, mostly because Samsung is not a US company and Verizon and it’s users are at their mercy. Because my son uses his phone primarily to text to my hubby and I, I decided to temporarily go back to the old device until I hear something.

I hope it’s not a long wait. My son HATES his old phone and is already sniffling and whining.

    Good luck, guys and gals!

  • Yep, me too. Except they are sending me a new phone. Maybe I’ll wind up with two perfectly good phones.

    • Matt, Are they sending you a “new” phone? or a refurbished phone? If you bought your phone within the last 30days, you could get it replaced with a new phone – or else they ship you one that was returned/refurbished.

      • Good question. They just said they’d send me a new phone out ASAP. So maybe its refurbished. Either way, if it’s just a software issue, both phones should work fine sometime soon.

  • They’ll likely send you out a refurbished phone…and they will expect you to send the old one back to them.

If you don’t send the old one back to them, you’ll be charged for the new one on your next VZW bill.

    • Hi omg busted, since your son’s phone is still in working condition (although deactivated), can you try what EB suggested by erasing all of the read messages? if that works, then there may be a quick soluton to help everyone else

  • Hi :)

I tried erasing his inbox before I even realized that this issue was update related with no luck. My friend has the same phone and it did not work for her either unfortunately. She’s spitting mad! hehe.

I’m glad it’s a fix that’s working for others, but it was a no go for us.

  • Thanks for the suggestion about deleting inbox and sent texts. Had my daughter do both and issue solved. Samsung web site troubleshooting was useless, and the Verizon store is always mobbed, especially with Christmas coming. Thanks again!

  • hi, i just got this phone today, and i accidentaly canceled the update when it started loading. now i haven’t received the update again. Do i need this update? and if so how do i get it to load again?

  • DON’T WORRY update to the latest that just came out today and it will be fine
