After we found out about the Samsung Trance’s then-impending software update a little early, I honestly didn’t expect to hear about it again. If things had gone smoothly, I probably wouldn’t have.

We’re hearing a ton of reports that the over-the-air update is breaking things, primarily surrounding text messaging. Whenever people hop into their inbox or try to view new messages, their handset resets itself on the spot.

I’ve been indirectly involved with a carrier software update in the past, and the fact that a bug like this slipped through the cracks is pretty mind-blowing. All of the carriers are generally insane about their certification process, often keeping things in testing for weeks on end. Something like this is bound to be taken pretty seriously.

We’ve reached out to VZW for a comment on the matter – hopefully a patch is already in the works.

  • So my phone would go to the start screen every time i tried to look at my inbox. To fix this, it worked to delete all of my read messages. Now I can check my messages.
I hope this works for everyone else too.

  • I did the same thing. I erased all of my read inbox messages and then everything worked fine again.

    Thanks for the advice :)

  • I was furious with verizon when I downloaded the “update” but luckily I found MW and Morgan’s comments, and everything is running smoothly now. Erasing your read inbox messages will allow the phone to work correctly.

  • erasing my messages didnt work for me :( Has anyone found another solution?

  • I just spoke to a Verizon Tech on 12/3 at 8:30 pm, because my son’s Trance had this update pushed and is in the same boat as everyone else here.

He told me that this is a known issue, is a top priority problem and that Samsung has been alerted to it but he had no ETA to offer as when it will be fixed.

It should be noted that some people have gone into Verizon stores to have their software reverted with some success, but others have also had issues with the revert putting their phone into a constant reboot mode, resulting in having to get a loaner phone. Might be worth a shot if you depend on text messaging and have no other device to fall back to.

Until then we swapped back to my son’s old device, and the tech guy will be texting me on a daily basis to let me know if there has (or has not) been a fix pushed, He said it could be as little as 24 hours or even weeks, mostly because Samsung is not a US company and Verizon and it’s users are at their mercy. Because my son uses his phone primarily to text to my hubby and I, I decided to temporarily go back to the old device until I hear something.

I hope it’s not a long wait. My son HATES his old phone and is already sniffling and whining.

    Good luck, guys and gals!

  • Sounds like the Blackberry Storm update all over again. I wish they would take the Storm’s update as seriously because Verizon’s “official” update ruined my phone.

C’mon Apple, let’s get the iPhone on Verizon!

  • So, i have some major issues from this update.
first i had the same issue accessing my text messages, i cleared the inbox and the problem seemed to resolve itself. however, i tried using the phone today after powering it down last night, and my phone will not make or receive calls, nor will it allow me to view text messages.
it has rendered my phone useless, and i called VW about the issue, and they actually have to replace my phone, the programming is completely shot.

    yeah… go samsung….

  • I erased all text messages and tried many other resets, reprogramming via *228, and other things, but still cannot get the problem to go away. Problem started after the software update. So, I don’t think this is solved. Same thing happens when a text is received to the phone.

  • I’m also having this problem. I tried emptying my inbox, but that didn’t work for me. I have a few messages locked, so they don’t get deleted. Called Verizon tech support and they said take it to a store with a technician. We did that today and the person at the store said there’s no way to fix it and they’re shipping me a new phone. She wanted to know why I updated it if the phone was working fine before!

  • I am having the same problem. I took it to a verizon store the morning after the update and they ordered me a new phone but at the time were unaware of anyone else having problems. After reading this and other things on the internet, I tried to clear my inbox however I have a few locked msgs and I can only unlock them if I could open my inbox-which I can’t because it just resets itself. Hopefully my new phone comes tomorrow!

  • my phone has the same problem after the update. the real problem is that the messages i have left on there are locked and i cant erase them w/o opening it and unlocking them. about 2 minutes ago another update was available from verizon (solution maybe?) … unfortunately my gf called and it stopped it 3% through. anyone know how i can get back to the update? or if you too got the update did it work?

  • well i tried it again. >Settings&Tools >Phone Info >Software Update. it keeps stopping and saying the server is unavailable but i have full signal lol. i’ll try it again later and i suggest anyone else still problems go ahead and try it. maybe it’ll work? : S

  • I updated and I have not had any problems as of yet. I was getting the “e” button error before the update.
