Mewbox for Android sounds great, but what’s the point without a good media player?

Feature
The idea of a portable music store with access to the major labels, and is DRM-free to boot, seems almost too good to be true. And it kind of is: it’s for Android. Not that there’s anything wrong with that — but have you ever used Android’s standard music player? Me neither, at least not after the first try.

Obviously there are replacements for the media browser, but if Mewbox wants to make it big (like Wham!), they’re going to have to be patient, because even as Android blows up, it’s going to take some time before people start relying on it as a music playback device. It doesn’t help that the launch phone (the G1 I know and love) didn’t even have a standard headphone jack.

But if you’re interested, go check it out. Sounds like it’s more than just a store: there’s some promotion and giveaway stuff going on as well. It’s new enough that it isn’t even in the Marketplace, so you’ll have to get it on your phone by other means, but give it a few days and I’m sure it’ll show up in the usual spots.

  • Dear Google (Android Team),

We love you! Thanks for all the work…etc

PLEASE GET TO WORK ON A MEDIA ECOSYSTEM. At the very least a solid media player. I love TC idea about adding online store with push etc. But let’s start with a solid media player experience.

OR (read: and pretty please also)

Make flash a reality (would separate you from Apple for reals!!! Think about a sites like HULU (yes I know hulu blocks mobile – ok tv.com) grooveshark.com (ya…don’t like the name either)

fine. just please get us something which makes it super easy to watch videos/listen to music on androids!

    please.

  • Thank you Devin for introducing me to a neat app.
I know people hate the default media player but I love it, it does what I want it to, play music and organize playlists. And if I want to see neat album art I switch to Mixzing.
Yes my G1 doesn’t have a headphone jack, and an adapter is sometimes a PITA, but for the most part I’m enjoying my music experience with my bluetooth headphones.
Like I said, it does what I want and works great when I am studying.

  • I don’t get the hate for the default Android media player, either. It works fine. Mostly, I use Gmote around the house to stream music off the server upstairs or Pandora or LastFM, honestly, but I’ve never had any problems playing any of the albums I’ve dropped on the myTouch. What’s the player supposed to do differently, exactly?

Also, as pointed out in the article, it’s replaceable if you don’t like it.

  • DRM??? Digital Rights Management

At last some one realizes Android misses the basic good music player. Thank you Mewbox.

    Coming to Android…
Are you a bunch of people working just on increasing the number from 1.0 to 2.0 and 2.1 and so on.
Let me say every one hates to have a huge chunky Smartphone and an MP3 player in their pockets.
Better get a good media player first and save your face.
