Just one month after the release of the Motorola Droid, the first software patch has arrived. Verizon has just begun distributing the OTA update – so if you aren’t seeing the update alert already, you should be seeing it before too long.
First things first, make sure your device is up to at least a 40% charge (or 20%, if it’s currently plugged into a power source), as you won’t be able to upgrade otherwise. After that, it’s just a matter of waiting around for the update to land on your device – or if you’re feelin’ antsy, try manually updating (“Home” > “Menu” > “Settings” > “About phone” > “System updates”).
Check after the jump for the change log.
Whats new:
x OS stability is improved.
x Battery life is improved.
x Camera auto focus functionality is improved, and time between shots is reduced.
x Enhancements for three-way calling.
x Audio for incoming calls is improved.
x When receiving a call on call waiting, the speakerphone now remains on.
x Bluetooth® functionality is improved; background echo is eliminated. x Improved Bluetooth phone book transfer of contacts to in-vehicle
Bluetooth solutions.
x After closing a GPS application, the GPS icon will now automatically be removed from the notification panel.
x Users can now receive SMS and MMS messages after an EMS message is received.
x SMS and MMS may now be sent to seven-digit addresses. x Google® contact merging has been updated to accommodate
seven-digit numbers. x Visual Voice Mail notices now arrive instantaneously. • The corporate calendar widget user interface is updated.

Anyone who has the update already seeing any speed up on the home screen/pull-down menu? Looking at picking the phone up today if the update makes it worthwhile.
Still slow as can be.
Still no more than 256 MB of ram for apps. Seriously.
Still no multi-touch.
Camera still sucks.
Physical keyboard still sucks
On-screen keyboard still sucks.
Multimedia still sucks.
Syncing still sucks.
Verizon still charges a fortune for early termination.
…another iPhone user that has nothing better to do. Half your comments have nothing to do with the update
Multi touch is available if you use dolphin browser. Get your facts straight
this is a iphone fanboy trouble maker.Just disregard what farting iphone fanboy said. You’re going to be Droiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid fanboy!!
My phone has just decided to start locking up and resetting randomly. I was going to go in and get it exchanged today when I read that this update was released. Figured I’d try installing it before taking it back however the freezing and restarting is preventing me from even getting to that point.
Just tried the manual update and it didnt work…
Also noticed mine says ESD20 too… so many updates to make ESD56
I just got my update on one of my droids ( weird I didnt get it on both ) Made a video for everyone who wants to see what it looks like http://www.guysfromqueens.com/?p=824
Darwin…. Go ahead and let Apple stick it to you… Phone works great! Def not an iPhone but we already know that dont need any help from apples whiney little b****
Manually updating doesn’t actually work. You can only do that once the phone has been instructed that it is ready for the update via the network. It sucks because I want the update *now* but I have to wait until my phone is notified of it.
Hey, HTC, I hope you’re reading this article.
And Motorola… the cliq needs some love
Havent got the update yet, but in the meantime I’ll amuse myself with watching all the jealous little iphone cockboys whine while our droids expand their already commanding lead. Cry on, baby. Cry on.
some guy made a video of it . I still have not received mine

Zhu zhu pets are at the top of my daughter’s Christmas list and I got lucky to find some at retail price. I used http://www.amzpricesniper to do it. It works pretty well. 2 pets for under $20 bucks!
Dont care about any update for my DROID that doesn’t involve me actually being able to send audio in SMS. Handcent works sometimes but mose of my audio clips for mass texts are longer than 5 seconds. Might just have to go back to the trusty LG Voyager.
Hey Apple, are you listening? I have been on my iPhone for 18 months and I still have an echo on my car’s BT connection and I cannot sync contacts with my car!
Why can’t they update it to include more than 3 panels? Just sayin’
There’s an app for that.
I have this new update why can’t. I get the new micor media flashplayer can anyone tell me why
