Most agree that the original TomTom iPhone app is a tad overpriced at $99 for just the app. That doesn’t include the $119 windshield mount. Esspecially now that Google has made its mark on the GPS market with the free Google Maps Navigation app. And so that brings us to the latest TomTom GPS app. This one is US-only, but only costs $50.

Actually it’s somewhat of a smart marketing move by TomTom. The company probably didn’t plan this from the start, but at least now there is some justification thanks to the international maps as to why the $99 app costs so much. It’s like the company is stating buy the cheap app if you don’t plan on leaving the States.

Even at half the price of the original app, $50 probably still carries a hefty profit margin and now more folks *might* be more likely to spring for the expensive mount. Although those people should still be reminded that standalone options can be had for less and come with a larger screen. Just saying. [App Store via Mac Rumors]

  • These companies still don’t get it. If they priced their product intelligently they’d sell more of it. Over $150 for this kit (app and windshield mount) is still not even close to being a viable choice for any moderately savvy consumer.

$99 dollars for just the app was actually a ‘laugh-out-load’ worthy notion.

  • I’ll bet that the four people who wasted a c-note on this app are pissed…

  • I am somewhat of an App store, app-at-the-best-price shopper, I want the most bang for my buck with ALL apps I purchase (like most others I presume). I still can’t believe how high priced TomTom was when it was SO late to market in the iphone app Navigation area. I couldn’t believe people were actually buying it at $99US to be honest!! The other version is US-Canada at $99, so adding Canada (keeping Canada) is worth an extra $50?! I don’t think so. TomTom was late to the meeting, overpriced, and this price break late in the game may not be enough to get the average TomTom lover back into the fold. They need something seriously that you can’t turn down to get those deserters back. Maybe a 24-hour $19.99 special to get the chatter going at the water cooler, or something similar. Navigon, Sygic, Magellan, CoPilot, etc. are too much competition with super high ratings to just think your name alone is enough to get the “buy app” button pressed in my book!

    • Hi, Billy.
The higher the price of an app the more profit margin for AppStore. So, Apple does not give a fuck about their prices too much.
I think $150 for crappy XP box is something you should really concentrate on, Billy.

  • I just wish Navigon would drop their price. I’d rather buy it. It kicks TomTom’s rear-end. Tomtom’s iPhone app is the same as the first dash gps unit I bought 7 years ago. Tomtom’s needs to get up to the future.

Not sure I want to spend any money on a GPS app now that AT&T wants to limit data usage.

  • Do any data roaming charges apply when using this navigation system?

  • i have a jailbroken iphone so whatever the price i can get it freeeeeeeeeeee hahahahahaha….
