Google’s semi-secret Nexus One handset has been more or less exhaustively leaked at this point, with very few cats left to let out of the bag. The only two major points left were the tech specs and the release date – and now, even those have made their way out.
Our friends over at Engadget just had a chat with someone who could spill the beans – and spill they did. Not only did they share the above spec sheet, but they also mentioned that Google’s planning on selling the Nexus One on an invite-only basis come January 5th.
What exactly that entails, we’ve got no idea. Who gets an invite? Certainly not Google employees – they already have the handsets. Long time Google app users? Members of the Android development community? Dudes named Greg who write about cell phones on the Internet all day? Either way, we just Google opens up sales to everyone before too long.
Highlight-worthy Specs:
- 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED Screen – Should be mind-blowingly gorgeous
- 119mm tall, 59.8 mm wide, 11.5mm thick – A hair thinner than the iPhone 3GS
- 512 MB RAM and 512 MB rom, with up to 32GB storage via microSD (4 GB comes in the box)
- HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100 – It’ll work on EDGE on both T-Mo and AT&T, but 3G will be T-mobile only
- 802.11n Wi-Fi
- 5 Megapixel camera with Autofocus and Flash
- Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR

Waiting for the bravo, if you look at the specs, it has more, plus verizon so yeah
I hate crappy music quality and it says the bravo has dolby so maybe its dolby mobile like the lg phones of late
Although Android fanboys would say anything with Android is better than any WinMo phone, I say the HD2 puts one heck of a fight and it’s at least on par with this phone.
I for one am believe the S.E X10 is the one with the pack to grab. Seems shinier than both of these. Nexus One Detailed-Specs: http://bit.ly/nexus-one-detailed-view
512MB Flash? Obviously Google doesn’t care about apps. Nice one-build the Bugatti Veyron of phones and give it a 12 oz. Gas tank.
What in the world are you talking about? You do realize Android supports external memory right? Large apps don’t need to save everything on the internal memory, all the large files (mostly resources like images, sound, etc..) can be saved on the SD card.
Sure, the apps can store data that they create / download / etc. on the card. But the app bundles themselves must be in the flash memory (unless you root the phone).
I just checked my downloaded iPhone apps. I have 5 that are over 512MB, 21 total over 256MB. None of those likely possible on this phone.
Even smaller apps you’ll be greatly limited by the number you can have installed based on this.
But the only part of the app that has to be stored on the flash memory is the actual executable file which are generally less than 2MB each. All other files that the executable file calls (or the app bundle as you call it) can be stored on the SD card.
I have a Droid with about 35 total apps on it right now and still have 212MB of storage left on the phone’s flash memory out of the total of 256MB available for storage.
Rooting the phone allows you to store the entire app including the executable on the SD card.

Did he just say “Google doesn’t care about apps?” hahahaha! What planet do you live on?? That’s all they care about!
why is the iphone the only phone with tons of storage?
Is 32GB not enough for you?
If my phone had 500GB of internal memory I would use all of it.
It isn’t.
It’s not lol you have quite a few others like the N900, N97 etc.
It’s not. Any phone that supports MicroSD (pretty much all phones these days) now has access to 32gigs of storage. Plenty of devices have 32gigs built in + 32 gigs external more than doubling the best iphone. Face it, your jesus phone is outdated.
just stop talking.
Wait– so 3G only on T-Mobile? WTF?
“Either way, we just Google opens up sales to everyone before too long.”
- think you missed a ‘hope’ in there.
and I agree, the sooner the better!
we just Google opens up sales to everyone before too long.
we just **hope** Google opens up sales to everyone before too long.
Missing one little point in that first paragraph: the price. We do need to know that, since it seems the success of this phone will likely depend on how much it will cost for consumers.
The real revolution with this device is the price and not so much the hardware features, even though for sure it’s going to be the best Android hardware so far.
I speculate that the price will be $199 unlocked.
I would buy it instantly if it were that little. But keep in mind, virtually every other smartphone is 300-600 w/o contract, and this one has much better specs.
Keep in mind, that manufacturing cost of all these devices is below $150 per unit.
Those $300-600 prices are only to scare people away from buying unlocked and signing up for $3000 2-year contracts instead.
Google doesn’t need to profit on the hardware, so they can sell it unlocked at $199 without loosing money. Then Google makes money on ads and services later.
me likey! sweet, tmo, means i can afford a cell phone (sarcasm). i hope i get an invite….please please please. need a new phone like a mofo.
OK…I’m over this phone now. This sttory was interesting until I discovered it won’t yet/ever be available on Verizon’s network. T-Mobile? What was Google thinking?
Probably thinking that they’d back up the first Carrier who supported them and risked alot of $ before the rest of the carriers like verizon jumped on the bandwagon.
Zing +1
Also T-Mobile uses GSM like the rest of the world, which means Google isn’t focused on having the phone work only in the U.S., but worldwide.
Yet still no Wimax :(
THANK YOU. THAT IS VERY GOOD.
I bet it’s going to be like Google Wave, where the entirety of Twitter is begging for their followers to invite them over the course of several weeks.
Actually, I don’t think it’s going to be like that at all, but it would be hilarious.
I’ve seen one (have a friend that works at Google), and it is very impressive. It is beautifully designed and the version of Android installed on the device has some pretty cool features. Is it better than the Droid? You bet! And, IMHO, Verizon is not a very customer friendly company (read: doubling your early termination fees is not terribly “customer friendly”).
I’m definitely going to purchase one. And they will be available very soon. Why T-Mobile? Not sure, but I’d speculate GSM technology. It is pervasive in most metropolitan areas and Europe. Not to mention some South American markets. Google should be able to sell a ton of these to markets inside and outside the US.
You are correct. I’ve been a T-Mobile customer for eight years, because when I travel in Latin America and Europe my T-Mobile phone works.
unless I’m reading the specs wrong- this unlocked device will also work on AT&T? y/n? thanks
@preston: yes it will work on ATT, but without 3G (EDGE speeds only). Tmobile 3G is the only one supported as of now.
Hello Sergey Brin!
Please send me an invite!
Hey.. Google made it, so it will be great :) Can’t wait to see the phone.. But how expensive will it be? (Hopefully not too expensive.. ^^)
After seeing the specs here, I’m still puzzled.
Eager to see the final product to make the right assessment……
Although I’m curious about the device also, I came here to say that the Nexus One picture on the CG homepage is absolutely an eyesore.
Will it have the crappy proprietary HTC headphone jack? For some reason that’s a no-go for me.
