PSA: Some OLED screens don’t suck under direct sunlight anymore

I loves me some AMOLED screens. They’re easier on the battery, easier on the eyes, and the colors tend to be so damned strong that they just about jump off the screen and punch you in the face. I mean, what’s not to love? Oh, that’s right – they tend to fail miserably as soon as you step outside. Mix one part direct sunlight with one part AMOLED screen, and you’ll find yourself with a completely illegible screen.

At least, that used to be the case.. We’re not quite sure why they didn’t play this up with deafening fanfare, but it seems like Samsung has stealthily solved the direct sunlight dilemma.

The guys over at OLED-Info pit the Samsung Omnia II’s OLED screen against the transflective LCD of the N900. While the LCD didn’t perform too poorly at all, the OLED screen absolutely demolishes it. See for yourself in the video below.

  • Wow, nice. Hopefully we’ll start seeing these in Samsung’s Android phones. :P

  • i’ve seen AMOLED screen before, and they def look good…but seeing the side-by-side like that, wow indeed. +1 android, nexus looks mighty good.

  • Now I feel conflicted. I only have two hopes for the new iPhone (summer 2010) and that’s a larger screen and a Cortex A9 (dual-core cpu – for native multitasking). If OLED tech is where it needs to be by summer that will likely mean that APPLE will opt to keep the screen size at 3.5″ while moving to OLED rather than using a larger 4.3″ (my hope – totally unsubstantiated) LCD screen. Personally I could live with the smaller screen if the pixel density improves, cause 480×320 isn’t cutting it for small text. OR perhaps we’ll get all we want: 5MP camera, 4.3″ OLED screen, Cortex A9 dual-core with native multitasking, and perhaps Steve will come to my house and wipe my tush too. A man can dream, can’t he?

  • Apple won’t change the size of the iPhone, because it was specifically engineered to be usable with one hand.
They really should invest in more screen resolution, though, because that’s one main selling point of the Droid, and one of the iPhone’s main weaknesses.
Really, I’d like to see all handhelds go up to 300 dpi. Text would be perfectly crisp and smooth.
