An internal T-Mobile memo from 12/29,

Google, with support from T-Mobile, is scheduled to launch a new Android device in early January. The Google Android phone will be sold solely by Google via the Web.

That pretty much says it. Now, how about a confirmation on the $199 price rumor?

  • I’ve been waiting to get a new phone just so I can get this. My current phone is cracked, bent, and broken in so many ways. Now I just wish it would hurry up!

  • $199 without a contract would be nice, but this even that wouldn’t make it the earth-shattering device that had everyone so hyped up a month ago. If it can only work on one of two GSM providers in the US, and only gets data from the lesser of those two, I don’t see it making a big impact. Android 2.0 is nice, but it’s still not quite as refined as iPhone or even Palm OS, and the hardware while good is not blowing the competition out of the water either. All in all, I’m going to guess that we’ll see a big spike in “meh” on the 5th.

  • Here’s my question (based on all the rumors and speculation), which obviously may be answered with the press conference:

What good is an unlocked phone that only works on one carrier in the marketplace??

I am thrilled with the announcement of the Nexus One and I have clamored after the HTC Dragon/Passion/Bravo for awhile. However, I’m concerned that I’ll have the same issue as I do with the iPhone. I won’t buy a device tied to a significantly inferior carrier. I would buy up the Nexus One (even with a contract) at launch if I could get the device on Sprint.

  • The android nexus one will directly compete with the iPhone mark my words! I feel with all their features that does what the iPhone doesn’t — they will find a solid market in the mobile app industry.
