New iPhone SDK with iPad support coming today, 100% compatibility with iPhone apps

Another year, another iPhone OS upgrade to get excited about. They’re not saying much about it just yet, but Apple has just announced that the new iPhone SDK (complete with support for the just announced iPad tablet) will be available today.

As partially predicted by the rumor mill, iPhone applications will run on the iPad. They won’t, however, run in little floating windows, as early faked leaks assumed. Instead, they will run in “blackboxed” mode at their standard resolution, or in a simulated fullscreen mode by doubling the pixels. Everything developers (and users) have come to know and love from the iPhone — from multi-touch gestures to accelerometer support — are fully supported in the iPad.

Developers (or anyone just dying to play with the included iPad simulator) can look for it in the usual spot (http://developer.apple.com/).

  • Boring-a giant iPhone to break.

  • Great news for developers. Glad to hear BuzzVoice will run on the iPad out of the box.

I assume the SDK will be updated to allow devs take advantage of the iPad’s enhanced features?

  • Where is the ground breaking innovation? Where is the ground breaking design? Where is the ground breaking software?

Everything looks like a reusable components of iPhone that made iPad.I dont want a giant iPhone without Flash and so low memory etc.

Its a giant iPhone cmon..i hate that same iPhone look now.

  • The iPad is the new segway. What a piece. Seriously. WIFI only? huh? No Flash. No Multitask. No Camera. I can’t go on…where’s my iPhone.

  • Does this thing have a USB port? Otherwise, what good is Keynote?

  • Here we go again. Jobs gets everyone to buy the first edition with no features so you can be the guy bragging on the street, then in 8 months he will get you excited about a 1MP camera, then early next year, maybe a new color.

It would be nice if we could all resist Apple so they can stop spoon feeding us and actually start putting the features we are excited about.

Would have been cool if the Crunchpad was around to compare. :(

  • I want a crunchpad instead of this POS

  • iPad = The Segway

  • Who will waste time developing for this c***, how many they will sell, 1K? 10K? I prefer to develop stuff in well known windows for millions of netbooks that has infinite more functionalities than this epic fail.

  • Starting at $499, they will sell a ton of iPads.

This will be the product that allows Apple to take away a much bigger piece of the windows market.

Before you scream “Apple Fanboy” – My main computer is windows-based.

    Ok, scream it now ;)

    • You’re on crack.

So this piece of crap; and a piece of crap it is, is $1000 bucks. $499 + $130 for 3G hardware + $360 for the unlimited 3G plan. Wow.

      • Except that you don’t need 3G. Period. So, it’s $500.

Especially in other countries, you’ll just use tethering to link your iPhone’s data connection back to iPad. In the US, too, if you’re jailbroken. And of course, you can always just spring for a Mifi (cheaper than iPad 3G), and do things that way…

    • No, John, as it doesn’t replace a computer it’s not going to take anything away at all because the people who are stupid enough to buy this are going to realise pretty quickly it’s no substitute for a laptop.

And, you know, having been suckered into buying one they might feel a little pissed off by Apple and look elsewhere for that laptop.

  • The million dollar question – does the new SDK support background processes? Greg, can you find out???

  • This is just an iphone with a big screen, how wack~

    Cons
    - no external battery
    - no blueray player
    - no camera
    - no hdmi port
    - no usb port
    - huge bezel
    - no flash
    - at&t only

  • The original iPod was an overpriced crappy music player with a mechanical wheel. I admit I’m a bit underwhelmed by this generation 1 device, but it has potential to evolve into something pretty cool. Lack of ports on something this size and lack of a camera are perplexing, though. Who knows what cooler devices live at 1 Infinite Loop?

  • For those interested:

iPhone OS 3.2 does not run on iPhone or iPod Touch!!! There is no download for the actual iPhone only a download of the SDK.

That means that this download is useless to anyone looking to upgrade to the next version of the iPhone OS.

  • wow it is like a bigger upgraded ipod touch

  • I want one of these. But Chuka is right. I hope they come up with something like this with all the bells and whistles so no need to upgrade to get those new features.

  • There’s no point in having a single camera on a device like this. If/when they can push data fast enough for DUAL (front/back) cameras, it’ll come to iPad, but not before.

And yeah, anything they can do to keep the price down with Gen 1, get a solid userbase, then upsell the Gen 2, the better.

Did anyone else notice that by making the 3G service prepaid/no contract, they’ve basically ensured a much higher generational “must upgrade” rate among adopters? Genius!

  • With the launch of the iPad tablet, Apple has managed to become the ultimate digital go-between company for high quality and high price content in a small yet very affluent segment of the population … NQ Logic encourages you to check out why Apple’s iPad is the final digital puzzle for their ultimate connected consumer strategy at http://www.nqlogic.com

  • I am going to wait this time for the second gen… I always go and buy the first gen for everything then in 6 months they have a a better version with a million upgrades.

You can’t get me this time JOBS!
