Looking at the iPad SDK, programmers are starting to say that the new version of the iPhone OS will support video calls, file downloads, and some sort of multitasking. There’s also several other features in the SDK that won’t work with the iPad, but would be applicable to the iPhone in it’s current configuration.
We might have been underwhelmed by the iPad, but the OS it’s running may be another story. We’re starting to see glimpses of a major software update that could include some of the functionality that people have really missed in their iPhone. It appears that the next update will include the ability to video conference, as well as run the video in a partial or full screen, suggesting that you might be able to use another application while making a call. There also appears to be support for multiple, and even custom dictionaries, as well as a handwriting keyboard. There are also hooks for location aware mapping as well as a file upload function in Safari. It appears that while the iPhone has taken it’s lumps from the Android, it’s not down and out yet.

Any developers looked at the “new in 3.2″ doc on the Apple Developer Center? http://bit.ly/btqAXl
I think iPhone OS 4.0 will support “switcher” style task switching.
The apps will not run in the background, but will be suspended and stay resident. That would allow rapid app switching (which is what most people want) without the battery drain for true multitasking.
Very nice phone and this also handle more mulitple tasking and video calls.
the one most dissapointing thing of ipad alos is it does niot support multitasking..
how we can expect from iphone oOS
All sounds good to me.
But how can you have video calls without an extra camera that is pointing at you??
Mirrors :D
creative thinking- They can now say problem solved very cheaply
wait to play with the iPad….
:-)
Jam tomorrow, eh?
They need to upgrade the OS soon. It’s going to be a while before the next iPhone release.
With the release of the iPad, I dought they will do any major upgrade to the hardware soon. But like @tech said above, the OS may not be far off.
It’s obvious that the iPad badly needs multitasking.
Apple could be pulling a very good marketing move here by displaying the product without multitasking, and then releasing it with.
Any time you underpromise and overdeliver on a product launch, it has an amazing effect on the product approval rating. Hell, the iPad would sell well regardless because of of all the foaming Apple fanbois, but dropping multitasking into it’s OS after having initially shown it without would be a very clever marketing move.
Some phones already have video calls, including my Nokia E71, but I have yet to find a carrier in the United States that supports it. Will the iPhone finally make U.S. carriers offer video calling support?
of course it will include it, just like the iPhone 3GS will include multitasking, video calling, hsdpa 14 support and Flash. This may well be the new Apple IIc, not a bad idea, but why the hell would you buy a computer, even a small expensive one, to play cell phone games? I mean a win7 tablet would be able to run a iPhone SDK and Emulator and this can run… cell phone programs? i hope people are smart enough to to buy a computer to play with a 10″ lightsaber.
They’d better hurry up with all the features you listed because every other phone on the planet has had em for a while now.
I’m bored of Apple BSing everyone into thinking they’re cutting edge when they’re so far behind in everything.
this brings the opportunities for VoIP companies to deliver the video calling service. I believe more involvement will come from the carriers and virtual carriers
