Patience is a virtue, but as tech fanatics who lap up the latest in hardware and software, we’ve not enirely familiar with that concept. So when we heard that it could take up to a few days for the Nexus One Android OTA update, it was a little disheartening. We want it now! And thanks to some clever folks over at Android Forums, we can get it right this moment. It just takes some simple tinkering and you should be good to go.
All it takes is a quick download and some button pushes here and there, but nothing so complicated that your average fifth-grader couldn’t do it. Here’s how you update your Nexus One:
- Grab the update and download it from here, or here.
- Put the update onto your SD card and rename it update.zip
- Boot your device in recovery mode by holding down the trackball and power button at the same time
- Go to bootloader > recovery
- When you see the image of the droid with triangle, press the power button and volume up
- Apply sdcard:update.zip
- It should start updating
- Reboot the system and you’re done!
Simple enough, right? However, if you feel uncomfortable doing all this, it’s certainly worth waiting for the OTA update instead of bricking your phone. So proceed with caution and enjoy your new multi-touch capabilities!

Is this update the exact same update Google is sending out? If it’s different in any way I would rather wait for the OTA update.
Yep, it’s the exact same thing. Basically, people who received it looked at the system log and found the URL where the update came from, which is that first link(notice the actual google url). I’m guessing the second one is just a mediafire copy that someone threw online as a mirror.
I just noticed it now, thanks Mark. I will update this bad boy tonight when I get home.
When not in the US, there are no OTA updates …
Thank You so very much for this !!!
One of the earlier source of this ‘manual update’ came from the androidforums, so far it genuinely works. And as for the authenticity of the download update, yes its official (android.google.com) Also, as Mark posted, you can have it on mediafire too. This type of update are suitable for users who just can’t wait to have a taste of that ‘pinch-to-zoom’ functionality. But if you’re not one of those guys, who doesn’t mind the stalling. Then I suggest, you just wait for the notification to your N1 phone.
I downloaded the file to my Mac, but it finished not as a zip file but a folder with many files. What do I do now?
I think you have to name the file and make certain that it has .zip at the end. This might fix your problem.
Love how it has multi-touch now! :D

Works like a charm. Updating is always a bit scary. The phone rebooted twice but multitouch works
omg that was so easy, took less than 30 seconds! thanks!
I just installed the new update and I’m loving it.
