This is Verizon’s 3G coverage map. See those little white spots amongst the green? More specifically, the ones in California? Those are the spots where Verizon’s 3G coverage is completely absent or mostly lacking. And, well, Verizon hates them – so much, in fact, that they’ve been spending millions of dollars every day to get rid of them.
According to Verizon themselves, the company pumped roughly $485 million into their data network in California in 2009. That works out to a bit over $1.3 million each and every day. All-in-all, the company has spent $5.7 billion in California, and $55 billion nationally since they launched in June of 2000.
So where’s that money going? New cell towers, primarily, followed by capacity improvements to towers that are already in place.

Kansas totally in the green? Being flat has its advantages.
Anyway, I’m still sticking to Red V and not that deadlast carrier called AT&T: http://bit.ly/att-going-down-verizon-is-laughing
Each carriers will always have their own flaws, but me? I’ll choose something that’s less more evil.
They have to invest money to get more customers.
i wonder how verizon stands up to other carriers based on the money each carrier puts into improving there network, we have all seen the verizon v.s. at&t comertals but which carrier is actualy improving there network the most?
nice project but hopefully the budget will be maximize on the project.
While I’m glad Verizon is spending so much money on actually improving their network, I will say that as a Verizon customer, they sure as hell take enough money from me every month.
Paying $145 a month for 2 phones with data (and that’s AFTER a 20% discount through my employer) is ridiculous.
It’s 3 times what I pay for my cable internet. It’s about the same amount I spend every month on my car insurance (yes, I’m a leadfoot driver with a fast car). It’s 1/3 of what I pay for rent (though I do have an amazing deal). It’s about what I pay for gas AND electric on average per month.
For 2 phones that can browse the web. Insane, but it’s either that or put up with crappy service through another provider every time I drive out of the city (which I do almost every day).
:: Sigh :: All I gotta say is, Verizon, I better damn well see LTE soon…
You won’t. See LTE soon, that is. On any carrier. Because the economy hates you.
Verizon is just telling this now to tell the WORLD customers that we care about you.
Ask Verizon to spent this amount of money in other small towns, they wont because serving the VIPs is what they do.
You want Verizon to cover every small town in the US? Me too. But at what cost vs return? They are a business after all, in the business of making $.
If you really care, get your local government to look into VoWiFi coming off of a microwave ring. Obama has set aside an 8 Billion Telecommunications Stimulus Package, aimed primarily at rural communities:
